A Little Summer Finish

Gentle Friends, what won't a day off and some late evenings accomplish... I finished up "For the Birds" and here's a snaperoo...

Loose Feathers "For the Birds" - a 9 Part Series by Blackbirds Designs
40ct "Biscuit" from Seraphim Hand Dyed Fabrics by Laurie
Using the Called for WDW Floss
5/25 - 9/7/2023

I really enjoyed this stitch, and will look forward to next Spring and another multi-part BBD stitch... always looking towards the future and the next project!!  I have my Hallowe'en piece all ready to go, then the Christmas Sampler... since both of them are smaller pieces I think they'll stitch up quite quickly so I've even pulled a third stitch, another sampler I've had lurking about for quite a few years...  It's only charted for DMC which I'll switch out for over-dyed floss and then figure out what linen to use.  But all that is in the future...  now it's a fun little Hallowe'en sampler to get a move on.....

A Little Stitchin' and a Little Tudor

Gentle Friends, I've made a good start on the 9th Part of "For the Birds". This last piece is called "The Last Ripe Berries."  Here's a snaperoo...

... sorry about how wonky it is but as per usual I took the snap with the piece still trapped in the old Q-snap.

Over the weekend I got us tickets to see the exhibition at the Legion of Honor called " The Tudors: Art and majesty in Renaissance England."
"Elizabeth I' by Nicholas Hilliard 1592
This painting is on loan from Hardwick Hall... It's an enormous painting and just gorgeous... notice the elaborate kirtle or underskirt a gift from Elizabeth Shrewsbury, or as she is better known as Bess of Harwick, the richest woman in England after Queen Elizabeth I.  The exhibition is here until the 24th of this month so if you're near San Francisco I would highly recommend getting over to the Legion of Honor for a view.  You do need tickets but they can be gotten on the Internet.

A Little Stitchin'

Gentle Friends, here is an overall shot with the 8th Part all stitched up... the only change I made to this square was on the front door.  It is charted for an initial, which I didn't like so I put in a little window to match the fenestration of the house...

I took off yesterday for a long weekend and got in some good stitchin' time... now on to the 9th Part "The Last Ripe Berries"... another big bird dominates the square...  looking very much like a pigeon... or as I like to call them our "City Chickens."

A Little Stitchin'

Gentle Friends, the 8th Part is coming along nicely... here's a snaperoo...

... I've gotten the garden stitched in with the orange tree on the left and the rose bush on the right with roses along the bottom... once I get the house in the middle stitched then it's on to the 9th Part.  I went back and re-stitched the bottom of the vine with a curly end (I really didn't like the way the vine ended before) and have done the same on the end of the right vine - I like this "end" resolution far better!!

A Little Stitchin'

Gentle friends, my needle was flying this week and the 7th part got completed.. here's a snaperoo...

... sorry about the wrinkles, but I just popped it out of the ole Q-snap.  I really liked the stitching of this part, maybe it's the parrot... I dunno, but it was a joy to stitch, and came together so quickly.  Part 8 has another large house and some trees so that will be a fun stitch.

A Little Stitchin'

Gentle Friends, I finished up the 6th part, and here's a snaperoo...

... with the piece at the 2/3rds spot, I thought I should start thinking about my next project,  So, I dug around and found a fun Hallowe'en sampler that'll work up nicely for the Fall!!  It's been a really lovely summer here by the Bay.  Upper 50's low 60's most of the time, lots of fog rolling down from Twin Peaks, and breezes blowing during the day... We've had our sunny days also, but they don't last...  thank goodness... for me, dank and foggy days are the bestest!!

A Little Stitchin'

Gentle Friends, so I've finished up the center square, and here's a snaperoo...

... the changes made to this part are to leave off the date and initial from the bottom as I've already stitched in the year and a letter "E".  Now on to the sixth part...

A Little Stitchin'

Gentle Friends, just stitching away on the 5th section, and here's a snap of the progress...

...  I've still got to add in all the beige flowers... A change I made in this section was to add on the right-hand side of the border those single stitches.  I did this so as to extend the image and leave the single stitch (two threads) break at the vine.  Although the counting was correct I couldn't figure out another way to visually widen the border without the single stitches, without the extension this section looked like a mistake.  Trust me I tried lots of variations with the border before settling in on this "fix."

A Little Stitchin'

Gentle Friends, I finished up the third part... "She Sights a Bird  " Here's a snap...

...now, as I stitched the "animal" between the two birds... what could that be??  The chart says it's a "cat' but I see a cute puppy... what are your thoughts?? Here is the poem (about a cat by the way) from Emily Dickinson that inspired the design...

She sights a Bird—she chuckles—

She flattens—then she crawls—
She runs without the look of feet—
Her eyes increase to Balls—

Her Jaws stir—twitching—hungry—
Her Teeth can hardly stand—
She leaps, but Robin leaped the first—
Ah, Pussy, of the Sand,

The Hopes so juicy ripening—
You almost bathed your Tongue—
When Bliss disclosed a hundred Toes—
And fled with every one—

A Little Stitchin'

Gentle Friends, stitchin' away on FtB, and here's a snaperoo...

...I've adjusted the stitching of the "bars" between the letters to fit a bit better with the vine/flowers and the outside border... I like how it fits better visually.

A Little Stitchin'

Gentle Friends, on the second Loose Feather of FtB... here's a snaperoo...

... when I began stitching on the second part I just left two spaces between the charts and got that bottom section stitched.  Even as I stitched along I really thought about the final image and the 9 parts together - I wasn't as happy as I could have been thinking about the final piece...  I then got on the old computer and started looking for finishes of this as a single piece and how they might look completed.  There are not too many out there but I did find an example where the stitcher had added a vine and flower chain between each of the three rows vertically... me likey!!

I frogged out that urn and flowers and figured out my vine addition.  I dug around in the stash and found a green (WDW Kudzu) and blue (WDW Blue Fescue) that I think works well - both of these floss colors are my addition to the called-for blues and greens.  I like the break between the charts since they really have no other connection other than being a series.  They do look a bit odd bumping up against each other.

I also noticed when I posted this snap that I am off on the right, going back and looking at the actual piece I'm off two threads down, so that means another round of frogging and a re-stitch as that dip to the right is makin' me crazy at the moment!!

A Little Stitchin'

Gentle Friends, after I wrapped up "Wild Roses" I started my next stitch which I had already kitted up so it was ready to go... I've gotten along a bit, and here's a snaperoo...

"For the Birds"  a series of Loose Feathers charts - BBD
"It's Spring Fever" - LF#1
40ct  - "Biscuit" - Seraphim Hand-Dyed Fabrics by Laurie
Called for WDW Floss

This linen is from a new for me dyer.  A little backstory... I joined a "linen of the month" club last summer with Drema at Needlecraft Corner.   This means I have been getting big 1/2-yard cuts of lovely dyed linens for the past few months and really wanted to put one to the needle.  I decided this was the project and I'm really happy with the feel and the lay of the fabric.  The weave seems just right not too tight, I hate that, and not so loose as to be floppy, I hate that also, it's just right.  So my little goldilocks world is doing fine and I'm enjoying this great stitch immensely!! "For the Birds" is a series of nine charts that I am stitching as a single piece - so it'll be three across and three down.

I hope everyone is having a nice weekend.  Since we are closed on Monday and I'll be sleeping in for sure... I wanted to get this up a bit earlier than usual.  That's about it for today on this foggy and cool Saturday Morning here by the Bay.  Thanks for stopping by do stop again.  Stay Safe!
