A Little Stitchin'

Gentle Friends, I forgot my camera yesterday so I couldn't post a snap of the slow progress I'm making on Sojourner....

... I finished up the "green" stitching now to add in the flowers .....I've still not decided whether to use beads or colonial knots for the centers of the big pink flowers.....decisions, decisions......

A Little Thrifting...

Gentle Friends, hitting the stores over the weekend and finding nothing, I thought it was going to be a bust and sometimes it is, but the last stop we found some fun stuff...

...  a couple of DVD's, a modern icon and a piece of sterling that ...

... turned out to be a vintage collapsible traveling shaving brush from Asprey
with its original boar bristle brush.  I had looked at it a few weeks ago, but at the time wasn't sure what it was, after a little research on the Internet I was able to identify what, where and when exactly about the piece.  It turned out to be a real bargain since after a month things go to half price and so not only is it a great piece of silver but I got a bargain - I do love a deal!!  What's so great about English silver is that every piece is so well stamped - with silver content. maker, city and date marks - this piece happened to be date marked 1921.

Remembering on Flag Day

Gentle Friends, whenever I think of the American Flag I think of the flag that flew over Fort McHenry and inspired Francis Scott Key to write the poem that became the national anthem....

... the flag now resides in the National Museum of American History on of the 11 Smithsonian's on the Mall... in my younger days, growing up in Maryland I remember School trips to both Fort McHenry ...

Fort Mchenry National Monument Fort mchenry national monument

...and to the NMAH so I've seen both the flag and were it flew... something I've never forgotten....  you can click HERE top read more about the flag ....  when I saw it many, many, many, years ago, it was actually hanging, now it is installed laying down at an angle to better preserve the fabric of the flag....

"No Count Sarah" - 1958

Gentle Friends, the post title refers to one of the most wonderful Studio albums ever put out by the incomparable Sarah Vaughn.  On this particular album is one of my all-time favorite songs, and I thought I would leave off the week with a little music........

...  the song is "Moonlight in Vermont" - published in 1944.  It has been a favorite song of mine for years and years and I have dozens of covers of it from many different artists.  I think Sarah's version is one of the best there is or probably ever will be.....  I hope you enjoy it as much as I do.

Thrifty Thursday

Gentle Friends, even with very little going on around here,
we did make it out over the weekend for a little shopping...

... we hit the usual "shops" and an Estate sale....  I picked up some fun stuf.....from L to R, an oversized transferware cup and saucer in the "Beverley" pattern, a super flat back Royal Worcester ewer date marked 1888, a commemorative cup from the Coronation that never happened for Edward VII, a DVD and I found a copy of the Blu-Ray release of "How the West was Won" one of only two traditional full-length CINERAMA films ever released.  Although it is a little light and sometimes silly on the story side it was magnificently shot and is really a beautiful film to watch...and the Blu-Ray release is a glorious restoration.

A Little Stitchin'

Gentle Friends, I'm still plugging away on Sojourner and here's where I left off last night....

... I'm still waffling about the centres of the pink flowers.... they are supposed to be filled with french knots done in "Her Crowne" and my knots basically suck as they are something I am just unable to master to my satisfaction, I am thinking of filling them with over one stitching...  I'll make that decision at some point later on.

A Little Bakin'

Gentle Friends, over the looong weekend I got a wild hair and wanted to make some "Sausage Pinwheels."  I think I might have done a post about them a long time ago, but they never hurt from a re-posting... a little back story...These are something my mom used to make and I 've been eating them for decades...or for as long as I can remember.  There are only three ingredients and they are super easy to make.......

... my tweaks to the original incarnation... are to use 1/2 & 1/2 and 2 lbs of sausage, 1lb regular and 1lb hot mixed together...

... you start off by making one recipe of the Bisquick biscuits, which you roll out into a single thin sheet of dough about 1/4" thick...

...over the biscuit sheet spread in a single layer the sausage up to about an inch or so of the edge...

...then just roll up this into a log and sort of squish it slightly so that the log is about the same thickness all along its length...

...  I then wrap the entire thing in plastic wrap, then in foil wrapping it tightly along the edges so that the biscuit doesn't dry out... I usually make this a day ahead of when I want to bake some - letting this rest and sit in the fridge overnight does let the log slice up easier when cold ...

... preheat the oven to 350 degrees, cover a jelly roll pan with parchment paper and slice the "log" into 1/2" slices, you can slice them thinner or thicker, but the thickness of the slice will change the baking time.... with 1/2" slices they take about 30ish minutes to bake...

...  basically bake until they are golden brown, serve warm !!

"In America, you can eat challah everyday!"

Gentle Friends, the title of today's post comes from a new breakfast place we got to over the weekend called...."Wise Sons Delicatessen"... located on 24th Street at Shotwell in the Mission.  Although we use 24th Street frequently we never noticed this place and it was due to seeing it on Check Please that got our attention....

... they have some seating outside and a small seating area inside, but when we went there we didn;t have any problem with getting a table.....

...the menu has a little something for every taste...

... Rico had the "Egg & Cheese" breakfast sandwich, and since we are in the Mission District they had some nice hot sauce on each table...

... and I got the L.E.O. .... the eggs were really delicious, soft scrambled with caramelized onions and smoked salmon, served with a bialy and a lightly dressed salad.  It was a really delicious breakfast and a great start to the day.   So, if you ever get a chance to try Wise Sons, give it a go, you'll not be disappointed!!
