A Little Stitchin' and a Little Dinner

Gentle Friends, I took off Wednesday and Monday for the Thanksgiving weekend... in between cooking and getting the house ready I've been able to get a little more done on MCEV... here's a snap...

... I just took this quick snap with it still in the Qsnaps... I'm thinking about changing up the roofline, but I still have some time... and here's a snap of us as we sat down to Thanksgiving...

.. our dining room is too small for all of us so I popped up a card table, slapped on a linen cloth et voila enough room...Rico whipped up a lovely centerpiece and I scaled back the menu a bit... turkey breast, crock-pot stuffing ( the real winner and I'll never make it any other way!!), steamed green beans, mashed white potatoes, sweet potato souffle with pecan topping,  roasted Brussell sprouts, homemade cranberry sauce, apple butter our friend Rob put up this Fall for my buttermilk biscuits and a dish of watermelon rind pickle.  We started off the afternoon with Kir Royale for everyone... at dinner, we popped both a red and white wine ... AND we sat down at 2:05 pm... only 5 minutes past when I said we would.  Usually, I'm so backed up I'm lucky if we sit down by 3.....  but I had prepped the hell out of everything so it was probably the smoothest and least stressed Thanksgiving ever...!  My sister and brother-in-law came down from Vancouver WA and brought a delicious Marion Berry Pie, and I had made a spiced dark chocolate cake for Mike's birthday.  There was very little leftover so I am very happy about that and everyone had a super time!!  Now on to Christmas Dinner.... we're thinking Brisket this year.......

A Little Movie, a Little Berry and a Lotta Saddness...

Gentle Friends, last night I pulled the first of the wrapped films for Christmas... what I pulled ...

... it's a super way to start off the season as I find this and Barbara's other Christmas film "Remember the Night" - both top of the heap fun Christmas viewing in my book!

I had quite a few questions about one of the pies we had... the Marionberry Pie.  The berry was the question as most folks have never heard of them. The berry comes from the northwest and was developed in 1956 at Oregon State in Corvallis.  It is a cross between Chehalem blackberry and an Olalliberry.. is a very sour-sweet berry and just delicious.  The pie comes from a Lee Farms in Tualatin  near Portland called

I received an email today from Sajou Paris.... that lovely store will be closing its doors.  It's very sad for me as it was a store I always got to whenever I was in Paris... bright and colorful and just packed with fun stitching things.  Now when in Paris I'll have to head over to the Bon Marche as there is a Sajou area there on the 1st Floor.

A little Stitchin and a Little Thanks

Gentle friends,  our Thanksgiving was very quiet with just the family.  Our usually large gathering was greatly reduced as most folks just wanted to hunker down and stay home and safe.  But, that doesn't mean I was going to set a nice table and Rico was sure to make a super centerpiece... here's a snap...

... I made a much-reduced menu... roasted turkey breast, cranberry sauce, turkey gravy ( I was really happy that I found my turkey gravy boat guy), sauteed green beans w/almonds, sweet potato souffle, mashed potatoes, herbed sausage stuffing, and poppyseed crescent rolls.  For dessert, we had marionberry and pumpkin pies.  It was a relaxed dinner and a lovely quiet afternoon.  Since the shutdown here in SF I've lost the store that carried the 15" white tapers I like on the table.  I found some no-drip ones online and was able to have 18" tapers... I couldn't have been happier!!  I got some red ones for Christmas!!

I also got a bit stitched on Christmastide... here's a snap...

... as you can see I've added a cornice just at the roofline.  It is charted without one and just didn't look right to me, and architecturally there would have been one...there will only be a little adjusting to a snowflake or two but well worth the effort.

A Happy Thanksgiving

Gentle Friends, although this year we celebrate Thanksgiving not as we would want ... but we can still be thankful for what we do have and who we have around.  I found these two old snaps on the internet and they really spoke to me of Thnaksginvings past...

... although I didn't grow up with a wood-burning stove I did grow up with my mom in the kitchen all day dealing with Dinner that was the highlight of the afternoon... always served around 2:30 pm.  That gave everyone time to relax and enjoy the meal, and time to clean up and sit a relax into the early evening.   Then when we kiddos came sniffing around for something to eat around 6 or 6:30...I can still hear my mom say "there are leftovers in the fridge, make a  sandwich!"  She had done the big job and so we did eventually go to the fridge and make ourselves a sandwich or two!!

A Little More Thanksgiving

Gentle Friends, after the long weekend and a fun Holiday I came back to a pile at work.  But, I wanted to share some snaps...

... after I set the table for Thanksgiving dinner... then I noticed... no napkins... they were still on the ironing board...but made it to the table before we sat down...

...we made a run the SF Flower Market Wednesday morning so that Rico could make the centrepiece... it was a great Thanksgiving my sister and brother-in-law drove down from Vancouver for the weekend and we some friends over so it was a full house and a tasty meal if I do say so myself!!
________________

On Friday we headed south to the Monterey Bay Aquarium and a private tour with of friend who is a Red Coat Docent there...  I love this bird !!

... it was a really lovely day as this snap of Monterey Bay illustrates...

... we walked all over the place and of course visited the jellies...
these I am sure are called Black Sea Nettle jellies...

... isn't this a great starfish!!

... I love the shorebird exhibit, it's so nice to see them up close ...

... isn't this sandpiper a cutie!!
___________

It was a super weekend!!  Now, as we jump headfirst into the Season.... it seems that every weekend we're booked up and haven't a moment to spare!!  I've started some baking and have our Cards on order and we're getting the house all bedecked for Christmas!!

That about does it for today sports fans, thanks for stopping by do stop again!!

The Four Phases of Thanksgiving...

Gentle Friends, I thought I would share some of our Thanksgiving and broke it down into 4 snaperoos...

... so I set the table this year with "Historic America" china ... my mom's wedding silver, my granny's crystal, some other bits and pieces of silver from various ancestors on the old family tree...the linen is from my great -grandmother...so once again I enjoyed remembering past Thanksgivings and family... Rico created the arrangement...

... we were a small group this year and our Thanksgiving consisted of..turkey, dressing, cranberry sauce, roasted brussel sprouts, white mashed potato, sweet potato casserole, crescent rolls, along with red and white wines...

... the aftermath of the meal and cleaning up...

and then Saturday night we hauled out the leftovers for sandwiches!!

It was a lovely day now it's on to Christmas!!

On Friday we headed to Alcatraz, my sister had gotten tickets a few weeks before... you get catch the ferry to Alcatraz at Pier 33....

... the gun to the left in the picture is a replica Model 1861 10 inch Rodman Cannon since Alcatraz began as a US Army Fort it was designed to defend San Francisco Bay from enemy attack.  at the height, of the Civil Was, there were more than 100 heavy cannon the island.  The Rodman Cannon ranged in size from 8-inch caliber guns up through 15-inch caliber models - the largest could weigh in at nearly 50,000 lbs.  by 1869 the US Army had shipped 39 Rodmans to the island.  The last of the cannons were donated to a scrap drive in 1943.  This replica weighs in at about 20,000 lbs, could fire a solid 128 lb cannon ball, with a range of 2.75 miles...

before getting on the boat we had our picture taken....

... although I took this shot as we were leaving this is where you land on the "The Rock."

... there are still signs of the Native occupation - 1969-71.

... a cell block...

.. a typical cell...

... the is one of the cells in "the Hole" - or solitary confinement....
________

... the views from the island are spectacular......

.... the approach to the island has this sign  for all who came here when it was a prison....

leaving the island....

... and returning to the city...
...  it was a really fun trip and one I had been looking forward to.  I've lived here more than 20 years and have never visited...  it was so worth a visit, my only recommendation is to get tickets before you visit, as they sell out early .

Thanksgiving Catch'up

Gentle Friends.... as I usually do I took Wednesday off, and with Rico already on a week off (he has so much time built up they hound him to take time off) we headed to the SF Flower market Wednesday morning for a tasty breakfast at the Bechelli's Flower Market Cafe and then on to the flowers...  at our house for Thanksgiving I do the cookin' and Rico does the flowers...

... we walked around all over and saw some really lovely things.....  tons of roses......

...  aren't these proteas great and so many lilies, you would have thought it was Easter.....

... there is just building after building and this is one of the the many booths....

....  another Booth we frequent, but he had still not decided what to put on the table.....

... of course there was tons of greens for Christmas.....  and berries and swags and .......

.... cedar, which we will be coming back for this weekend since we gotta get our Christmas going.......

....  Rico did a really wonderful job once again!!!  This was the table Wednesday, set with my Mom's wedding china - Castelton "Lace," the smaller Pink Luster plates were my Grandmother Warren's, I got 4 when we broke up my Mom's house, and found a couple more of them on the bay of evil....  the crystal was my Grandmother Mathews', Tiffin "Persian Pheasant," and the silver, linen and cut glass pieces are from both sides.

It was a wonderful Thanksgiving, and I'll finish up with the weekend tomorrow.  Thanks for stopping by do stop again!!
