An Estate Find and a Fine Film

Gentle Readers and Dear Friends thank you so much for all your kind comments about yesterdays post.  I mentioned yesterday about the framed piece I picked up on Saturday - I got a couple of snaps of it last night and here they are...

and here is a detail of the actual frame...

You can see the Victorian print is kind of sappy - and had a run in with some water, but that was not what I was buying - the frame is in perfect condition with and opening of 17 1/2 x 19 1/2 this will fit a good sized sampler at some point. I tried a couple of my completed pieces and they just do not fit.  Which is a shame as I really like this frame and wish I had something that would fit sot hat I could hang it up.  I was surprised that such a great frame was even left by Saturday afternoon as the house was pretty well picked over by the time we got there.  It might be that this was hanging sort of high up and in a dark little hall near a laundry room - I just snatched it off the wall - and $5 later I had a great old frame.
__________

If you remember one of my favorite stories is "A Christmas Carol" by Charles Dickens and since we are coming up on Christmas ( Only 60 More Days!!) I thought I should start my annual re-watching of the different film versions that have been made over the years - I started out this past weekend with a favorite version of mine -

The 1951 B&W versions starring Alastair Sim - I have always enjoyed this version so much and would recommend it to anyone.  It is out on both DVD and BluRay.  The movie hinges on the Scrooge performance and Sim is really wonderful!!  The supporting cast is also excellent with Kathleen Harrison playing Scrooges charlady - and Mervyn Jones and Hermione Baddeley as the Cratchits - this Holiday classic is well worth a look.

There you go sports fans!  Thanks for stopping by do come again.

Take care,

  1. What a lovely frame! You do have a knack for finding treasures. :) I love that Alastair Sim version also- nothing like the oldies! Though I do like "Scrooge" with George C. Scott as well.

  7. A gorgeous frame and a wonderful find for you! I always wonder the same - why do people leave such beautiful frames at sales, but it is good for me to find them. A Christmas Carol with George C. Scott is always on our to watch list every Christmas!

  8. That is a great frame! Too bad none of your pieces fit. Maybe you'll stitch up the perfect thing to go in it. I love Christmas Carol too! I love all the various versions. lol! Alistair Sims' version is wonderful though, you're right. Didn't know it was on DVD. Hmmmm....

  9. First of all, Alistair Sim's version is by far the BEST! However, my all time fave Christmas film is "It's a Wonderful Life". I watch it year round, LOL!

Secondly, I love that painting you found!!! Do you plan to keep it in the frame or are you reusing the frame for a stitched piece?

  11. Love the frame and the price (true scot). I am assuming the samplers you tried were too big/wide for the frame. I collect frames for my stitching pieces and find using a mat to adjust to size helps greatly. Sometimes have to cut a little with exacto knife or double them up. When white mats don't do the piece justice take a wet tea bag and stain the mat for vintage look or softer white. Looking forward to seeing a piece of your stitching in the frame....lovely!

  16. Love the frame Edgar. When I go down to Florida my sister in law and I haunt the 2nd hand stores and I look for old frames. They are great and look great with our wonderful stitching in them.

  17. You are so lucky! You get to watch Christmas movies before Thanksgiving! I've been forbidden to watch my movies before then. Have you ever seen Love Actually? It is one of my faves. I love the opening scene when Hugh Grant is speaking about the arrival gate at Heathrow. I think that's what heaven is going to be like...when we see all of our family that has gone before us. Thanks for the great posts. I enjoy reading them and truly look forward to them everyday. Ana

  18. The frame is beautiful and I know one day you will find the perfect piece to fit it. I remember watching the old Reginald Owen version of A Christmas Carol when I was 8 or 9. It was pretty late at night and the Ghost of Christmas Past scared the pants off me!

  20. That frame is divine!! Lucky to have found it!! And that is my FAVOURITE Scrooge movie too!! I have such fond memories of watching this with my Dad around Christmas time. It's his favourite too. When my parents finally got a DVD player, I bought him the DVD of Alastair's Scrooge. He loved it!!

  22. I used to work in an art gallery. If you have a perfect piece for this frame but it's too big a good gallery can trim it down (depending of course the type of wood etc) to fit. Since you only have $5 in it, if you totally love it, it might be worth looking into! Pam in SC
