Wednesday Yappity Yapping

Gentle Readers and Dear Friends as you know I was supposed to have my annual eye appointment yesterday... that didn't happen....and the story goes something like this.........being the crazy "gotta be early" type person I am, I arrived at about 3:35 for a 3:45 appointment.  Karen the receptionist greeted us warmly and asked seriously - "Do you have an appointment??"  ....... Did I have an appointment?.....  why of course, I called and switched it just a couple of weeks back.....  Clicky, click on the computer keyboard went her little fingers...... with a befuddled look, nervous giggle  and a slight cough...  she looked around and out into the waiting room at the two people waiting for their appointments -  I could hear the Doctor in the back with another patient in a consultation.....  then Karen, weakly smiling.... asks "are you in a hurry??"  With a stunned look - I then ask "Am I not down there for an appointment? - with a raised eyebrow  (I do that with my eye brow frequently, ask anyone that knows me).   To break the uncomfortable situation I then jump in with  "I can always come back later or even another day."  She then exhaled with relief  "I have a cancellation on Saturday morning, how about that??"  So I move my appointment to Saturday morning.  I did spend about a half hour picking out some new frames - called "Madrid" and the colour is named Oxide, they by the Spanish designer Etnia Barcelona, they look kinda brown to me, but hey, I'm not some fancy shamcy designer type person.

Tonight continues TCM's 31 Days of Oscar - and the line up is great!!!  They are "visiting" the MidWest with three super films.

Starting off at 8EST/5PST with "State Fair" - 1933 - the first incarnation, no music - starring Janet Gaynor, Will Rogers and Louise Dressler.

A great film around a family spending a week at the Iowa State Fair.  This story was remade twice more, once in 1945, a musical version with Jeanne Crain and Dana Andrews and then again in 1962 - another musical version -  with Pat Boone, Ann-Margret and Alice Faye - all three are worth a look.

The second film of the evening at 9:45EST/6:45PST is "Bye, Bye Birdie" - 1963 - starring Janet Leigh, Dick van Dyke, Ann-Margaret, Maureen Stapleton and Paul Lynde.

The story is of a kiss given at a farewell performance of a rock star on his way from private life into the service.  This kiss is to be given by small town girl from Ohio....  lots of fun songs!!

The third film is another musical - 11:45EST/8:45PST - "The Music Man" - 1962 - starring Robert Preston, Shirley Jones and Buddy Hackett.

This super musical story revolves around a con man coming to small town Iowa to start a boys band - but does not bargain on falling in love!!  Some really stupendous musical numbers!!

I hope you can catch one or part of these films this evening.

  14. You just have to love Ann-Margret singing Bye Bye Burhee as she says it. I could never figure out why she sang it that way, but it was a hoot nevertheless and a great movie!

  15. Some great flicks you mentioned Edgar. I haven't seen The Music Man in a long time but who can resist some of the great music and little Opie Taylor/Richie Cunningham looking so darn cute. I love Bye Bye Birdie too...when I was about 14 I was in group that performed many of the songs which still stick in my brain. After all, what IS the matter with kids today?? LOL
