A Weekend Finish

Gentle Readers and Dear Friends another weekend come and gone - it was lovely here in the City by the Bay.  I made it to a couple of Estate sales and the regular Thrift/Consignment Shops, did some cleaning around the house, a couple of loads of laundry..... you know the usual stuff you do on the weekends.

I also stitched/worked exclusively on Shores of Hawk Run Hollow.... and finished that sucker up!!  I was determined to get'er done and so I could move on to another project...

Here are some snaperoos...

close up of Blocks 2 & 3

The large center Block 6/7 and a close up of Block 10

and the entire piece....

"Shores of Hawk Run Hollow" by Carriage House Samplings
August 14, 2010 - April 29, 2012
36ct Vintage Autumn Gold, NPI Silks

I stitched this in spurts and it did sit in my WIP's basket for long periods of time.  I think that's due to complete burn out at some points - where I just had to take a break from this piece.   I made two major changes from the original as charted directions.  The First change came in Block 8 - I personalized it with an ancestor from my Family Tree - and the Second change is I used NPI 928 Atlantic Blue instead of 993 Black for the Box outlines - and I am so happy I did.  The black, to my eye, did not set off all the blue's in the piece.  Even with taking breaks and a bit of gripping along the way  - it is a great stitch....  but you do need perseverance in some of the fill stitching areas!!!
_______________

Here are my "treasures" I found out and about on Saturday....

It is really hard to tell the size from this snap..  the rolling pin is a half size one, the Longaberger Basket is small and called tan "Herb Gathering" basket... I think, and is dated 2003 (for 80 cents how could I pass it up??) The little Belleek is from the 1960's, the Icon is on a piece of turned wood the size of a goose egg - the picture is the Veil of St Veronica - it is hand painted and gilded with some Cyrillic writing on it..... and the great transfer ware bowl everything is in dates to about 1900 - not a bad haul.

That's about it for today sports fans - don't forget to sign up for my 5th Blogaversary Drawing.  Thanks for stopping by do stop again!!

Take care,
edgar

  2. I've told you before how much I have enjoyed watching your progress on Shores and I heartily congratulate you on the finish. I love your estate finds, especially the small rolling pin and the basket. The icon is quite lovely. I expect you have a pretty strong Russian orthodox presence on the West Coast ... left from the days the Russians colonized Alaska and explored down the coast. Can you date the icon? Is it the work of a 19th or early 20th century artist or is it modern? Icon painting is a living art, with many practioners painting even today ... so a relatively modern piece wouldn't be out of the question either!

  61. Beautiful finish. I am making note of your color change for the blocks as I agree that the black is a bit stark. You always find the most amazing things - suppose it comes from living in an amazing city - definitely note going to find things like that in back woods Virginia where I live.
