Weekend Treats

Gentle Readers and Dear Friends your great comments where so nice to read this morning!!!  I do appreciate you all and love reading such nice things.
____________

The weekend unfolded into two sort of lazy "do what I want to" kind of days - I had some "might do" or "could do" plans but instead threw them into the bin and stitched, watched a bunch of flicks and cooked - I did get the vacuum pushed about and a couple of loads of laundry done, ironed and put up - and we did make a trip to the grocery store and farmers market- but none of that really cut into some quality "me time."  I basically stitched for both days - but none can I show as all of it is for two upcoming Exchanges.
____________

So, what can I show you ...

here are some flowers Rico picked up 2 weeks ago - still looking pretty damn good! (This snap was taken on Saturday) He added some vodka and sugar to the water and it really has extended their life.

I got a great present in the mail on Friday - I'm doing a little favour for a sweet Blog Friend and she sent me a "A Present for a Deer Friend" - from "In the Company of Friends."  They have some great things I have admired for a long time!!

I opened the box and out popped a lovely little note card and wrapped prezzie (isn't that super paper, I do love toile)...

Inside I found this darling tri-fold needle-keep with two marking pins, two needles and a gorgeous mother of pearl ruler - all of the pieces that "ItCoF's" do are hand made and just so sweet!!  At some point I'll show you what I am doing...  but not at the moment.  It is a bit too soon!!  :)
_____________
I did get in the kitchen and rattled some pots and pans....  making....

cabbage rolls - hot and steamy right out of the oven...  and....

... some, cranberry/white chocolate chip cookies - I'll get those recipes up in the morning.
____________

After Mass yesterday we headed out to Trader Joe's and the Mall "Farmer's Market."  With it being winter there market was on the small side, but still vibrant...  I got some snaperoos...

.. aren't these unusual - they are a hybrid between a cauliflower and broccoli - of course I bought one and will steam that sucker up tonight... how can it be bad being made from two super tasty veggies!!

... there was lots of root and winter type things to be found....

...  and of course citrus - the Meyer lemons are pouring into the market - just lovely for pie and lemony things - and the little satsumas are super tasty - we got some and they are great!

The pretzel lady was there and so we needed a couple of these also - really delicious!!
____________

I think that about wraps it up for today sports fans.  Thanks for stopping by, do stop again!!

Take care,
edgar

  2. I want a nearby Farmer's Market!!! There is one in the next town south, open from May to Sept., but only on Sunday mornings which interferes with Mass. Yes, I know Mass only takes an hour, but traditionally my husband and I have a leisurely breakfast together before I go to the 11:30 Mass. Given our horrendous work schedules, I am most unwilling to give up that rare twosome time. There is a community sustainable agriculture co-op several towns to the east that I hope to join in the Spring. In the meantime, I'll just have to envy your supply of gorgeous vegetables and fruits.

  3. I love Stargazer lillies and have quite a few in my garden. I love when they bloom and the whole yard smells like a funeral parlor, I mean sweet. The yard smells sweet! JK, I really do love 'em and never knew about the vodka!

    Have a great week!

  6. It sounds like you had the best kind of weekend - stitching, a little shopping, a little eating - what could be better. All that food just looks yummy. And I never heard of putting vodka and sugar into flower water - sugar yes, but not vodka. But it makes sense - my FIL loves his vodka and he's going strong at 85! :o)

  7. Lovely gift from your friend! Love the pics of the farmer's market too. You must report on how the cauliflower/broccoli hybrid tastes. The stuffed cabbage and cookies -- yum!

  10. Boy your cabbage rolls and cookies sure look good. Stargazers are my favorite. I'll have to remember to use a little vodka so they can party on. Your hybrid veggie looks like something from under the sea. Let's call it caulicolli because there is no poetry in broccoflower.

  11. Sounds like my kind of weekend! I can almost smell those pretty flowers... vodka, eh???

What an awesome gift from your blogging friend... love it!

As I sit here typing waiting for my soup to heat up, I am drooling over your cabbage rolls and those cookies!! Too bad I'm the only one in the house that likes cabbage rolls... it's the thing I always like to order if I see it on the menu when we eat out :^)

  12. I have GOT to visit SF again ... lol! Those pretzels alone would make the trip worthwhile! So many places to eat good things : ) I'll be looking forward to the recipes & hearing how the crossed vege turns out. Broccoli is my all time favorite & cauliflower runs a close second : ) Blessings, Shirlee

  13. I'm a new reader of your blog Edgar and had to comment on your hybrid veg. It's called a Romanesco cauliflower here in the UK and has a delicious nutty delicate flower. It's an old italian vegetable that has been rediscovered. Pure joy to eat!

  16. Yeah! So glad you liked your little giftie. Thanks for posting a picture, because she said she would gift wrap it, and I'm glad I got to see what it looked like. Seriously, I know it's not much, but I really do appreciate the huge favor you are doing for me.
Who knew that vodka had so many good uses! I just found out that if you add a small bottle of the cheapest vodka to distilled water, it makes the most awesome spray starch I have ever used! I can't praise it enough. I'll have to remember that it works well for flowers too.
Looks like wonderful weather in San Fran. Love the pictures!
