Old Photo's

Gentle Readers and Dear Friends the rains they are a' fallin!!  It started with a drizzle yesterday afternoon and sort of kept up on and off (more on) for the rest of the day and evening.  Now, we are to expect the second "wave" of this first of the winter storms late this evening and through the weekend.  Looks like a it will be a stay at home and stitch kind of couple of days!!!  No complaints here!
___________

Last night I did next to no stitching so I didn't bother with a snaperoo
- but I'll have a couple of snaps on Monday I am sure!
__________

At my Mom's house over Christmas I was the first in town so I put up her tree. Which involved me climbing up a rickety pull down attic ladder - and a'scratching around in her attic looking for the damn thing AND the decorations - while I was up there I came across a ratty old box and because I was not happy to be dirty, dusty and sweaty - and I had banged my head twice - I sat there bitching a blue streak and thought I would take a look - I found some great old photos of my Dad as a child.

On the left is he is 4 months old so that would have Christmas of 1931 and on the right he is 7 - 1938

There are so few pictures of my Dad or for that matter my mom either, as a child that this was a real find.  Knowing how we three ( my brother and sister and I) had been photographed almost daily (or so it seemed) it seems so strange to have so few photos of my parents as children.  My Dad loved photography and even taught it for a while, so there are boxes upon boxes of our growing up and the minutia of our lives - I guess that's what sparked my interest in photography.

On the left he is 8 - 1939 and on the right he is 10 in 1941

So between these four photographs and when he was a Senior in High School - at Needham B. Broughton High School  in Raleigh, NC - there are no pictures out there that I know.

  2. Such great photos! I have very few of my dad as a child either. I did recently find an old school pic of my grandfather though. It was from the early 1920s and I think he was maybe 8 or 9. Very cool!

  3. Awesome snaps, Edgar; your dad was an adorable baby and handsome young man. And what a treasure to find them...

Try to stay dry my friend!!

  4. Photos like that are quite a find. Looking at them, I realized that I've only seen photos of my dad as a teenager and older. Not too many of my mom as a child either. I guess back in the 20's and 30's, large families didn't have the means to take a lot of pictures. I just treasure the photos I have!

    1. I really needed one - what I caught my head on were some of the nails from the shingles poking through - they are just bear pints and whapping my noggin on one of them was not pleasant!! Ouch!

Thanks for your sweet words - sometimes I worry that what I write will come off bad or someone will take offense... but I can't worry about that. :)

    1. I did look about a bit more, didn't find much else of interest - after a while I was just way to wet with sweat and just had to get out of the attic.

    1. I usually just walk about getting wet - I do enjoy the rain... unless it is really coming down in buckets - then out comes the trusty umbrella.

  16. Oh my goodness - what wonderful, irreplaceable treasures! Reading this reminded me of the scene from the Chevy Chase movie, "Christmas Vacation". I'm so happy you have the pictures - they can be so precious and tangible links to those we miss so much.

  18. Thanks for sharing! I have only ever seen one or two pictures of my parents (they were born within 10 years of your father). My dad took tons of pictures of me when I was a baby (I was the first born). By time my youngest sister was born (she is fourth in line), he had lost interest in taking pictures of babies, so there are very few pictures of her as a small child.

I love the new blogger comment format - I try to respond to all the comments on my blog - someone took the time to leave a comment, I think it's important that I respond. There is nothing that irks me more than being the only commenter on a blog, and never, ever, get an acknowledgement from the blogger. (Obviously, I'm not talking about you - you have always been so polite in sending me a note - it always makes my day that you take the time to respond to comments!)
