A Little Stitchin' - Meet Miss Sarah......

Gentle Friends, this is my 2000th post so it is great that I am talking about the start of a new stitching project... after finishing up "The Plantation Sampler" I pulled another OOP chart out of the old stash pile and I had already done all the digging about through my linen and deciding between overdyed flosses, I finally got started .....  Sarah Maddock by Simply Samplers....  a schoolgirl sampler from 1810....here's a snap of the first stitchity bits of border....

... after I saw this piece a few years ago on another blog I had to have it and eventually I found this kit on the bay of evil - and it comes with the DMC floss and a 27ct piece of linen.... I've changed out the linen to 36ct piece of "Barn Owl" and the DMC I've converted over to lovely Belle Soie (Classic Colorworks)  silks.... in shifting to silks I've also changed the odd colored berries from the weird blue color to a purple/grape color I like better.

The border is really great (and it is what I was first drawn to ) and is made up of grapes, berries, and skinny leaves... the berries are made up of a gold and pink, now my quandary is - do I like the lighter shade of pink (Rustique) or the darker shade of pink (Terra Potta)??  I am leaning toward the darker of the two, the DMC shade from the kit falls between these two shades of pink..... but I kinda like the darker.

  1. Love the berries, are they strawberries? My husband sometimes comments that I have a lot of patterns. I always say you must buy them when you first seem them, otherwise in a few years time when you see some other stitcher working on one you can never find that pattern again OOP.

  2. Not that my vote counts... but I vote for the darker. It doesn't get overpowered by the beautiful bold color of the grapes. Eager to follow your progress!

  7. Looks like a good start. I always have trouble deciding on the colors when I change one. It's kind of like the domino effect.

  8. Dearest Edgar: What a beautiful choice you have made to stitch.
    I love this design.
I am with you the darker of the two.

    Have a Blessed Thanksgiving

  9. Wow--congrats on 2000 posts!

I am swooning over the border on this new start! Your conversion and linen choice are just tops! I do love a good BoaF linen! Are these both of the pinks shown here on these buds? If so, how bout scattering both through, with a slight favoring of the darker, as you like it more?

  10. Congratulations on 2000 posts!
That border is gorgeous. I like both the pinks on the berries, why not alternate them?

  11. Congratulations on your 2000th post! Here's to many many more.
That's a beautiful start, I particularly love the colour of the grapes. I like the darker of the two pinks too but great suggestion to mix a few paler pinks in with them. I'm sure you'll choose the perfect colour.

  14. Love this chart. Can't wait to see your progress.

I am assuming the "pink" is used for the alphabet and houses. If this is true, I would use both in the border, the lighter one for the alphabet and then the darker of the two for the houses/barn. This would make the buildings pop.

But whatever you finally decide to do, it will be gorgeous.

  17. Can't wait to see more of this sampler. I like both of the pinks so I agree that it would be good to scatter in a few of the lighter pink with the majority done in the darker pink. It makes me think of real ones that would have some on the vine that are not quite as ripe as the others - gives it a realistic look. Happy stitching.................
