The Last Couple of Days

Gentle Readers and Dear Friends I am back feeling much better - and got out over the weekend to see some lovely things.  Thanks for all your kind thoughts and comments!!

One of the things I had been putting off was a visit to see the latest exhibition at the de Young Museum in Golden gate Park.  We have an abundance of great Institutions here in the Bay area and I really do not take advantage of the great things they bring here.  I will see the posters around town, I'll see the banners and the ads on TV - and think "I really need to make the effort to go...."  but time just slips away and then whatever wonderful was there is gone.  Well, I was cutting it close this time - the last day to see some beautiful paintings was yesterday - the exhibit had only been up since October!!  But, I made it and it was so worth it!!  The exhibit was called "Masters of Venice: Renaissance Painters of Passion and Power from the Kunsthistorisches Museum, Vienna."  I had seen many of these paintings the last time I was in Vienna and really wanted to see them  again.  You can look at page after page of pictures in a book and tons photos on the tube but to really "see" the painting in front of you is something special and extraordinary!!  Here are a couple of the paintings that where in the exhibit...

After leaving the museum and going back to my car I walked through the Park that separates the de Young Museum from the California Academy of Science and took this snap...

There is an upcoming show called "The Fashion World of Jean Paul Gaultier: From the Sidewalk to the Catwalk."  It begins in March and should prove to be very interesting!!

I worked some on "Oregon trail" and here is an update snap....

The large square on the right is charted with the initials - I am not sure how I will fill it....  I also need to work in a break line between the verse and this first band.  Since I flipped the sequences of bands the bottom to top there was not a line or break bar there.  I'll figure something out once I get more into the band.  I have had to fix a couple of not charted things - and will go back and fix a couple of other bits not charted that appear on the final photo I like better.  I am really enjoying the colours of this piece!!.

I baked up a nice easy coffee cake yesterday...

It's basic and tasty!!  I'll get that recipe up in the morning.

Weekend Things!!

Our weekend started off with a lovely evening - we decided to drive across town a find parking on our own and stop for some dinner first.  Driving up Grove Street we found a very convenient Parking lot and stopped there instead of the big Performance Parking Garage a block closer to the Davies Symphony Hall - we thought - or I thought - it would be so much easier to get the car out after the performance.  We walked down to Jardiniere for supper - it a really nice restaurant and they know that most of the patrons are stopping there on the way to Davies SH.  After finishing we walked the block on over and had plenty of time to spare.  We found our seats and settled in for a great performance.  I got off a couple of snaps at the intermission - although pictures and recording devices are strictly prohibited - here is a snap from out vantage point...

The seats we had were super - right on the front row center on the 2nd Tier - my only issue with being right on the front means that there was the obvious heights issue - I do not do well with heights of any kind at all - but I sucked it up and enjoyed the performance.

Saturday we got up early went out breakfast and did our weekly grocery shopping - and then off to estate/junque saleing -  not very much at all out there, but I found a couple of pieces...

 

The great platter is only marked "forget-me-nots"  - which has to be the name of the pattern.  The vase at about 9" tall, I think is from the 1930's and from Japan?? - inside I found a receipt inside from a now defunct department store here in SF called "Willoh's."  I have found a few references on line but no real info about this store, but the receipt is dated December 20, 1946 and is for 2 blue gown at $2.98 each and 1 green gown at $2.98.

On the stitching front I worked a little on an exchange piece and I started a new piece....  I just couldn't resist...  here is a snap - 

I pulled the floss and picked out a piece of linen and got a tiny start - This is "On the Oregon Trail" from Heartstring Samplery.  I am using the called for floss and stitching it on a piece og LL 36ct Vintage Light Examplar.  I got this chart when it first came out and have been wanting to get a start ever since.  it is a band sampler telling the story of the an imaginary family's journey  from Illinois to Oregon City.- the only change I have made is to stitch it not as charted but flip the bands to start the story at the top and not at the bottom.  You can click HERE to see the completed piece on Beth's Etsy shop.

I also worked a bit on "Tis the Season"......

I am taking my time with this piece as it is on the small side so I can savour the stitching....  this will be put away for a bit while I finish up the exchanges and stitch up the March Cottage.  I got "March" the other day and have pulled the floss, now to stitch it up.

and yesterday I baked up a coffee cake....

.....it's a "Chocolate Streusel-Ribboned Cake" and is pretty tasty.  I'll post the recipe in the morning.
