Makin' a Sampler

Gentle Readers and Dear Friends thanks so much for the great ideas for my "Blessings" piece - I do like the idea of a hanging piece.  Something to put up during the Holidays.  Now to get to actually putting that into action.....  some scary sewing in my future I think!!
__________

Not very much going on - still stitching away on my Exchanges - they are Fall Themed so that is nice - all the muted colours of floss I really Love.

There is a little something going on - and the title says it all.  I am a member over at Samplermakers - a great Blog site that Lori from Notforgotton Farm.  With that said - what is up is the great "Autumn Stitchers Challenge" that Jennie Lynn has cooked up.  When I first heard about this upcoming challenge I got super excited. Basically the challenge is to design and stitch up a sampler  - Included in the "rules" are some large and small motifs that may by used - and at least two have to be used in the finished piece.  Now, my little ole brain has been all a bubble for the last few days - I have the colour palette worked out - the piece of linen chosen - I have the center stitching all figured out (in my head) - I have a little poem I want to include (also in my head)....  but my stumbling block is the border.  I have been perusing all over the Internet different sites with samplers looking at borders.  I really don't want to copy an existing one but I want to modify one - I have an idea, but there is not a thing that is modifiable to look the way I want it to look.  For me a sampler is made or broken on the strength of the border and it is usually the first part that I am attracted to - so it is uber importante that I get this part right.  I'll keep you updated as I make progress.

  6. Looking forward to see your sampler. I was tempted to jump also into it, but decided not to. There is so much I really want to stitch at the moment.
I'm so curious what you're going to come up with. I always love your stitching, and I bet it's gorgeous.

  7. Borders are important! I have a great deck of playing cards that is all different cross stitch borders... charted right on the card! How fun is that? I look forward to seeing your sampler Edgar, I'm sure it will be wonderful.

  9. I quite agree that borders are a crucial element in any sampler ... and I look forward to seeing what you create. I am working on an Earth sampler right now that had a very assymetrical border ... sometimes that actually works ... but not this time in my opinion. I re-charted as I went along and made it symmetrical and am much happier with it.

  15. Wow! designing your own sampler that's brave. I've thought of it and even bought a book on the meaning of the different motifs found in samplers. So far it's just an idea for me-no reality. Lots of luck to you! Can't wait to see your design!

  17. Can't wait to see what you come up with for the challenge, Edgar. And what a great snapshot. I would love to see my neighborhood circa 1901. It would probably be all fields, lol. I'm in a suburb of Cincinnati, Ohio, and I don't think this area was developed yet.
