A Quick Friday Post....

Gentle Friends...so, I work across the street from an Art Gallery.  They support and exhibit contemporary art...or what passes for art sometimes...and this was outside today for their new show opening tomorrow evening...

...Lordy!!  I hope this is not some of the "art" they are showing and is just some crazy thing ... that, BTW, has been popping here and there all day long...hee, hee, hee!!!  I'm so evil sometimes!!

A Lotta Relief

Gentle Friends, so our three days of Summer have ended, and the 90+ degree weather here in the City has dropped back into the 60's and I am once again a happy camper!!  Yesterday I left work around 3:30 and the temps were hovering at around 87... by about 5 pm they had dropped into the low 70's and by 5:30 looking out my back door towards Twin Peaks I saw a most welcome site...

... the fog pouring over the hill and bringing with it sweet cold weather...  then by 7ish the weather had dropped to about 60 and I took this snap ...

... the whole of Noe Valley was wrapped in Fog and I had to turn the heat on a tad to take the chill off the room and make the hounds happy and I had my usual after dinner coffee!!  Now things are back to normal and life is beautiful!  - and most importantly I picked up my stitching again.

A Few Fun Things......

Gentle Friends... we've been having some really hot weather for this time of year here by the Bay... Monday the high was about 98... Tuesday with a high of about 90... and today is supposed to only get to the low 80's but we'll see later on... what' good is that it only lasts a few days then it's back to the upper 60's low 70's... what's bad is that there is no air-conditioning in my life... none at work and none at home..... only in the car during the ride to and from work or shopping can I crank up the air and sort of get cool/cold... all this heat will break in the next day or two, but it's too hot to stitch in the evenings so I sit in front of a fan with a bourbon a soda and swelter.... and... watch "The Spanish Princess"  a pretty good show!!

Over the weekend in addition to the usual running around, we headed over to Japan Town...
for lunch and a little shopping...

... and we headed to our favourite little Japanese eatery... Kushi Tsuru....

... starting off with Hiyashi Wakame (seaweed salad) delish!! and some starter sushi... Tobiko (flying fish roe) on the left and Hamachi (yellowtail)..... then it was on to the delicious roll...

... a Spicy Tuna Roll...after lunch we walked around a bit and ended up at Kinokuniya a really large bookstore with tons of fun Japanese things and books... so I picked up from a large collection of little Nano Block projects.....

... and I put that sucker together when I got home.  Thank goodness, there were detailed instructions because there would have been no way I could have gotten a finished Grey Wolf from a bag of tiny blocks.

I also picked up this new soda... and really liked it!!  I like Coke, always have always will, I really do not like Pepsi, RC or off-brand colas, but I like a good cold Coca Cola!!  Flavoured Cokes never really hit the mark with me and Cherry Coke is a flavour that makes me gag, so I was leery of trying this one but was pleasantly surprised after a sip or two... and even bought some to have at home!!

A Little Stitchin'

Gentle Friends, I finished up "Page One" of the ASB,  and here's a snaperoo..

...what's actually pictured here are the first and last pages of the book... or as I interpret the instructions these are the first and last pages...  I did change up the color of the flowers to a lovely lilacy/purple silk.  I thought the leaves were very reminiscent of lilac or even violet leaves... the flowers were charted to be the dark blue color of the letters to the left but hey, it's mine and I wasn't sure what the dark blue flowers were supposed to be and I went with what I like instead.

... of my dad, me and my mom that was taken around Thanksgiving of 1963.  What's up with my mouth hanging open and the deer in the headlights look I'm giving!!

Gentle Friends, stitching away on the "Book."  Here's a snap of where I left off...

... finished up the first page.  The silk photographs quite a bit darker than it is in person, it's a nice darkish blue...  on well.  There were a couple of missing stitches that I added in because it would have driven me crazy not too!!

A Little Stitchin' Finish, a Stitchin' Trip and a Stitchin' Start.......

Gentle Friends, so... you knew I was wrapping up Swan Pond... and I did so here's a snapperoo...

Swan Pond Sampler 1797
by The Knowville Tennesse EGA Chapter
40ct "Ale" from PTP
I Converted the charted floss to various overdyed floss from my stash
3/19 - 5/24

It was a totally fun piece to stitch.  The poem was written by the son of the builder of the house when the family left Knoxville after the Civil War.  I am also really happy that I changed up the piece by completing the large alphabet and reworking the house info.
____________________

I had been thinking for a few days about what to start next an landed on a chart from stash... of course I didn't have a piece of linen big enough - and - it had been charted for Hand Dyed Fibers,(which no longer exist) and DMC... so I pulled the DMC to see what the color palette looked like.  The charted palette was too pale for me so I needed to figure out what I wanted to do...  I took Friday off so I headed over the Bay Bridge to Alameda to my LNS Needle in a Haystack to do some shopping... I took my camera so I got some snaps...

... I picked out a nice big piece of linen and spent a couple of hours figuring out the silks I wanted to work with and here's my little start...

Alphabet Samplings Book
from "with my Needle" by Ellen Chester
36ct Light Examplar LL
Various Silks I converted from the charted DMC Floss

I've had this chart for a long time so I was really excited to get a start on this piece.

... the colour is way off on this snap, but you can see where I'm at with the piece.  I've finished up the house with the windows and the backstitching.  Now it's only a little bit more and then on to the next project... I've been thinking about that but haven't landed on anything yet.

Some Lilacs and Little Cake

Gentle Friends, after mass on Sunday we were walking down to the Castro for brunch and libations.  We passed a flower stand and there in one of the many flower buckets was my favourite spring flower... lilacs... and I couldn't resist...

... so they came home with me and look lovely in the living room... and smell better!!

A Little Stitchin'

Gentle Friends, still stitching away on Swan Pond... here's a snap...

... finally got a roof on this sucker, and I really like the decorative nature of the herringbone stitch to replicate... shingles??  Looking around I finally found a floor plan for the house online.  It drives me crazy when I can't figure out - or am not 100% sure about the room placement.  So, the rooms are...  looking at the house the ground floor has a parlour/living room on the left and dining room on the right with three bedrooms above the centre room is the smallest of the three with a stair hall in the back in the middle. To the right is the kitchen wing with a bedroom above.  The central door on the second floor, I'm guessing, must have led onto a small flat-roofed porch of some sort now long gone.  That door now has a small gate in front of it to keep anyone from falling from the second floor.  I tried calling the house but couldn't get anyone to answer the phone to ask so I'll stick to my guess.

A Little Stitchin'

Gentle Friends, still stitching away on Swan Pond... and here's a snap...

... and here are some thoughts.  I decided to modify the vine border a bit to finish out the capital eyelet alphabet line... and I'm in the reworking of the house info under that in progress... I started that info line and sort of like it but not really... and so I stopped and I'm working it out on paper before I stitch any more of that.  I've finished up the fill of the first floor of the house and really like using the pinkish coloured floss,  I've still got the second floor to fill in and there's a one-story extension to the right to complete. With only those bits left on this sampler, I've started to think what's up next...

A Little Stitchin'

Gentle Friends, so, I forgot to take a photo of SP Sampler last night but got a quick shot this morning before leaving the house... so it's still "snapped" up and a little sloppy...

... I've started on the house and as I stitch I'm choosing to use the darkest parts of the overdyed floss as I go along to replicate the pink-marble stone used to build Swan Pond.  I'll probably go back and frog out the chimney cap as it looks a bit light to me. Also, after the house is completed I'll do the charted backstitching.  I do like the "limestone" quoins, stringer and headers.

A Little Break with some Stitchin'

Gentle Friends, so... I've been away since last Thursday, just a little staycation, but it was nice and quiet.  Did some laundry, vacuuming, and some general puttering. Rico also took the time off so we went out to breakfast a few times and slept late... not that the Who-hounds would let that happen...but later than 5:30 am is sleeping in around our house!!

I did get some stitching done and here's a shot of Swan Pond Sampler...

... it was at this point that I made my first big change.  The sampler as charted had the eyelet alphabet ending with the letter "M."  Well, that didn't sit well with me so I decided to extend the alphabet to the end.  The Sampler has/had a large medallion with information about the house in this space.  I will rework that info and use the space better, IMHO.  I've also decided to change the charted colour of the house from a sort of woody brown to a more appropriate colour to represent the pink marble and limestone house.

A Little Remebering

Gentle Friends... with the tragic fire on the Ile de la Cite at Notre Dame Cathedral on Monday got me to thinking about some past visits to Paris and so I dug up some of my own photos...

... this is my favourite tea shop on the left bank where you can get...

... a pot of tea and some delicious cream filled choux... and while you enjoy this treat you can sit an look at this view...

... I took this shot of the towers of Notre Dame sitting at Odette...

... here's a shot of the front...

... from the Petit Pont (or Small Bridge)...

... here's a shot of the now lost roof and 19th-century spire taken from the Pont de l'Archeveche (the Archbishops Bridge)

... and a shot of the gardens at the back of the church... all the roof structure is gone along with the spire. There was so much loss but there was so much saved... I've been really lucky to have been able to visit Paris quite a few times and to see this wonderful structure both inside and out.

.... and a shot I lifted from the interent of the high alter amid the ruble.

... and yet more stitchin'

Gentle Friends, over the past week there's been an HBO watchathon and I've been binge watching GOT (Game of Thrones). If you've been reading this blog for a while you know that one of my worst traits is that I can dig my heels in and can be, as my gran would put it... "stubborn as a Georgia mule" about many things.  One of those things has been GOT.  Coming from a history background I have real issues with "history-based" dramas.... with this faux-historical stuff... they try really hard, but usually miss the mark by, like a mile!  Over the years I've avoided any bit of exposure to GOT.  I've had lots of folks in my life try and get me to watch, but I am stubborn and refused!!

So...with all the talk lately about Season 8 of GOT starting up, I thought I should give it one more chance.... and after watching about five episodes it started to click a bit and now I've gotten through 5 and 1/2 seasons and really want more show!!  With a cast of thousands, warlocks, white walkers, the children and three dragons... I am totally hooked!!
______________

While I was watching all this GOT sex and killing I was stitching away !!
Here's a snap of where I left off...

... sorry about the gigantic wrinkles.  I was really happy about the border matching up and not being off!!  I think I'm going to change up the second alphabet.  You'll get to see that next week.... unless it doesn't work, then I'll rethink it, but for now and in my mind I think it will work out... so fingers crossed!

here's a snaperoo...

... so I've turned the left corner and started on the alphabet.  I'm thinking about expanding the larger alphabet which occurs under the small one I just started.  I'll tighten up some of the words and shift the poem...but for now, it's all just up in my head and I'm just thinking about doing some changes...we'll see when I get to that point.

A Little Poem

Gentle Friends, on Monday, a neighbor in our building that we've lived by for the past 13 years passed away.  He was a good guy,  kinda quirky, he was single and lived by himself.  His family/friends have already cleared out his townhouse...

Whenever confronted with death I have often turned to the poetry of
Emily Dickinson... one of my favorites is...

The Bustle in the House

The bustle in a house
The morning after death
Is solemnest of industries
Enacted upon earth, -

The sweeping up the heart,
And putting love away
We shall not want to use again
Until eternity.

A Little Stitchin'

Gentle Friends,  still plugging away on Swan Pond and here's a snap...

... I've started up the left side of the border and filling in the alternating flowers.  I did a little research on the internet and landed on some information about wildflowers and Tennessee.   I think that the flowers might represent a "swamp rose" and "whorled sunflower".  Both of these wildflowers are native to the eastern part of Tennesee.  There was no information about the border in the instructions so I'm going with a swamp rose and sunflower.  The photo makes the roses look quite orange, but the floss is a pinky red filled in with a dustier pink color.

A Little Thrifting

Gentle Friends, although we're out and about every weekend there's not been too many things that I wanted to bring home from our travels.... so I've collected up some of the stuff I did bring home for a little post ... here's a snap...

... from L to R... I picked up the French hard paste mid-19th-century floral saucer at a Salvation Army... I knew it would fit and work with the cup I had picked up last year... and it did as you can see... The Roseville "Laurel" vase is in perfect condition and was totally mismarked and I got it for a super price!!... the small Edward VIII Coronation cup I just picked up on Saturday, I collect Royal memorabilia and even though he abdicated, I had never added an Edward VIII piece so this fit the bill... the plate is French and from a series called  "The Nations" made in the 1870's this one is Germany... the gilt and violets bowl was another super find.  The mark on the back  I knew was an early Derby mark from about 1800 so I snapped this up for a $1... the sterling butter spreaders I really didn't need but again a good price gets me every time and the tiny little Wedgwood piece was just too cute to pass up!!~

A Little Stitchin' Finish, and a Little Stitchin' Start

Gentle Friends, so I wrapped up 1798 Quaker last night and made a teeny tiny start on my next piece.  Here are some snaps of both projects.... first up...

1798 Quaker Sampler by Goode Huswife
40 count "Barn Owl" from Linens by design
Using the Called for NPI Silks
1/20 - 3/18/2019

It was a really fun piece to stitch.  I loved the colour changes and the use of greens and browns.  I modified many of the initials and even changed one of the motifs from a small over 1 section to a larger over 2 medallion.
_________________

My next stitchity project is from stash... it's a chart I've had for years and years languishing in the pile.  I really don't remember how I found out about the sampler in the first place, I must have seen it on a blog.  Here's the tiniest of starts...

Swan Pond Sampler 1797
by The Knoxville Tennesse Chapter of the EGA
40 count "Ale" from PTP
Various Overdyed Flosses

It's a great sampler with two alphabets, a great depiction of the Ramsey house, a couple of bowls of fruit and a super border. Could you ask for a better-built sampler!! You can read more about this great Historic Home HERE. I love the idea of this sampler and that the local EGA created this piece in honor of the house and the history of the area.  Although the sampler is charted for DMC I again chose to work out my own floss combination from my overdyed floss stash.

A Little Stitchin'

Gentle Friends, starting to wrap up the 1789 Quaker with the addition of all the initials... here's a shot of where I left off...

... I'm adding in all the bits, pieces and extra stitches along with the charted initials for fill.  It's interesting that they, the initials are scattered about and some are over 1 and some over 2.  It almost feels as I stitch that they were added as an afterthought where there was space.  Oh, well, trying to puzzle out why something was stitched over two hundred years ago is futile so I'll just move along and work it out until I finish up.

I've picked out my next project.  Something I've had in my stash for years and although not a "Historic" sampler, it's a sampler all the same.  Based on mid-Atlantic pieces the piece I think it will be fun to stitch up... and it has a great border!!

Gentle Friends, it was a nice quiet weekend.  The high point was having dinner at a friends house, then they screened "Chinatown" in their home theatre, so nice to see a great film on the full screen!!
I sort of stitched on and off throughout the weekend and here's where I left off...

... I think I've come up with a good idea for stitching in the initials and bits to replicated the fullness of this stitched piece.

A Little More TREK!!!

Gentle Friends, it was just announced that Star Trek Discovery will be back for a third season!!  WooHoo!!  I guess I'll just have to keep my CBS Streaming Service a little longer!

Image result for star trek discovery 2

I am such a total nerd about Trek and the Trekking Universe.... it drives someone crazy and he runs when it's on the old tube, but I do love me some Trek.  I think my favourite incarnation would have to be Star Trek Voyager, I know lots of fans think it's the weakest of the lot but I enjoy Janeway and the crew!!  I think it might be the actress Kate Mulgrew who brings her to life I enjoy so much because she is super as "Big Red" in Orange is the New Black.... but back to Discovery.

I would highly recommend a look if you enjoy the Original Series, Next Generation, DS9, Voyager or even Enterprise (my least favourite)  the acting is good, the effects are spectacular and if you let go that's it's supposed to be a prequel to the Original Series you'll totally enjoy the show!!

A Little More Stitchin'

Gentle Friends, I'm slowly moving along the bottom part of the sampler from R to L.... here's a shot...

... thus far it's been a pretty easy stitch, and so long as I pay attention as I stitch the mis-stitches are few and far between...!!  This is an antique sampler and it was charted as it was originally stitched in the 18th century.  This "original " charting includes quite a few mis-stitches and wonky bits.  I have, as I stitch along fixed a few of them, so long as they don't shift other motifs or create problems down the road.  Mostly I've just evened up some of the problems that would drive me crazy, like missing or badly placed stitches.  I think I've come up with a plan for the inclusion of initials.... some that are meaningful to me and some that are just filler....  there are so many in this piece!!

A Little Stitchin'

Gentle Friends, so another weekend wooshed by once again and as I sit here on a cold (45 degrees outside) Monday morning I think back and say... lordy, that long nap yesterday would be nice to repeat just about now!!!  On TCM they had a really good line up of musicals so after I got home from the 8am Mass I ran the Who Hounds out for potty then flipped on on the tube, sat down with a big cup of coffee... then wrapped up in a quilt and promptly fell asleep.  Rico was down in the Valley visiting his mom this weekend so the house was quiet, except for the TV.  I had planned to stitch all day, but the best-laid plans of mice and men often go awry... you know...so here's a shot where I left off on my stitchin'...

... it's still a great piece to work on and I really like the colour changes along the way.
