A Little Old and a Little New Stitchin'

Gentle Friends, since I wrapped up Apostles Creed I didn't have a new stitch kitted up completely so I pulled out an older WIP to work on...

... HEiotS, is a piece that sort of languishes in my WIP basket and so I pulled her out and stitched in some of the animal and plant motifs while I was waiting on some silks I didn't have in my stash to come in...
________________________

I decided that the next piece I was going to stitch would be a traditional sampler, I almost went Quaker, but held back and flipped to a really lovely piece from Scarlett House called...

... Smith Sampler.  Here's a snap of my very small start... and here's a snap I lifted from the internet of what this piece will eventually look like...

Image result for scarlett house cross stitch

... it photographed much lighter than the finished piece will eventually look like... As usual, I really liked the border and think that's what originally drew me to this sampler.  I'm stitching it on 40ct linen using the called for colours in mostly the called for silks.....

A Little Dinner

Gentle Friends, we headed out to a fun dinner and I remembered my camera...

... although there is a menu board, they have daily specials on a board outside...

... the menu board over the inside counter...

... Firewood is known for this open brick oven and...

... roasting chickens...

... this is a shot of the front dinning room... bright and colorful...

... so the way this works is you order and pay at the counter, you are given a number for your order and then head for a table... I ordered a really tasty beer, very hoppy with lots of citrus, a true summer beer - it's from Drake's Brewing Company in San Leandro, CA

... Rico ordered a peporoni pizza and salad...

... and John and I had the baked rigatoni, all these dishes were good!!
______________________

... after dinner, we headed around the corner to The Castro Fountain.....

... Rico got a double scoop of "Yas Queen" and Strawberry/Watermelon Sorbet, Yas Queen, is a vanilla based Ice Cream with their rainbow cake mixed in...

... John got a double scoop of Tres Leche and Blueberry Cheesecake ice creams.... and I got

... a piece of the rainbow cake to take home, I was really full and although I wanted this cake, I knew it was better to wait, take it home and have it later with my nightly cup of coffee, and I did and it was totally wonderful at about 9pm!!

A Little Thrifting and a Fun Fall Stuff

Gentle Friends, so it's been a while since I've posted any new finds..... and here's a snaperoo...

... from the left... a small oil on board sketch by Louis Morin, "Allegory" ca. 1895.  I think the sketch is for larger work that I'm researching...  next up is a walnut Victorian frame that has some nice gilt work and faux bois with chip carving, the picture in it is a really nice Wallace Nutting coloured photo called "The Old Drawing Room" ...and ... although we certainly don't need them I picked up a large Pink Willow cup and saucer and a Wedgwood mug with maps of roads in the UK and the "Dominion of Wales" ca 1650... it's become my new favourite cup!!

You all know what a nut I am for Converse chucks... well, the new "skull" shoes have come out and of course, I had to get a pair....and along with them I got another pair of Looney Tune shoes... and here's a snap...

... the skull shoes this year are really different from last years offering of pastel ...

... the little skulls are really great!!  Very Halloween!!   All Hallows is on its way and I'm very excited...only 83 days away!!!

A Little Stitchin' Finish

Gentle Friends, over the weekend I finished up "Apostles Creed."  Here's a snap...

Heartstring Samplery "Apostles Creed"
July 5 - August 3, 2018
40 ct Vintage Exampler
Mostly the Called for Overdyed Floss

I really enjoyed this stitch and as you may remember I clipped the bands and rearrange them to fit.  I also went back and backstitched the angles wings with a little shiny golden floss and like the way it worked, thanks for the suggestion.

My next stitch is sort of ready to go.  I had decided on my next project then changed my mind.  I didn't have all the silk I needed so I had to order a few skeins...  now I'm waiting for them to arrive.  While I'm waiting to start a new stitch I hauled out a WIP and worked on that ... I'll post a snap of that later on.

A Little More Stitchin'

Gentle Friends, still stitching away and here's a snaperoo...

...I made a change in the Tree/Angel band with the Angel.  I changed up the gown from another shade of green to the blue color, it's GAST "Cornflower" I tried a couple of light blues and really like the way this one looks.  In stitching this piece I figured there was so much green already that another green was unnecessary.  I'm thinking about frogging out the wings as they are really light and melt into the color of the linen....  but I'm going to think about that one.

A Little Friday Post

Gentle Friends, it's been very quiet here by the Bay with lovely cool foggy days and some sunshine... I didn't want to let the week go without another post so here's a super video from Moana...

... the movie of the same name is about a Polynesian Princess who wants more out of life than what she was born to... it's a great little Disney film from 2016 and the music is top notch.  It's out on both DVD and Blur Ray so readily available.  If you've not seen it I would recommend it!!

A Little Foggy

Gentle Friends, it's Summer here by the Bay and for the past few weeks, we've been having our usual marine layer of fog roll in daily.  I went to YouTube and found this great Time Lapse video from a couple of years ago of the City and the glorious fog rolling in ..... enjoy...

... almost every evening I have to click on the heater in the house to take the chill off the rooms.  I really enjoy watching the fog and where we live in Noe Valley we have a great view as it comes in across Twin Peaks.  I love the cool summers !!

A Little Stitchin'

Gentle Friends, still stitching away on AC.... here's a snaperoo..

.... and if you look this piece up online you can see the first change I made... it's the band break, in the original pattern the band is of crowns and I switched it out with the modified rose band from the bottom of the sampler... I've also modified some of the letters as I stitch along making them a little more "sampler" like IMHO....  as with all of Beth's pieces this is a real joy to stitch and will end far too soon!!

A Little Thrifting

Gentle Friends, out thrifting this weekend I found a couple of things...

... I found the vase in a thrift store and it was pretty filthy when I got it but it cleaned up nicely... from the mark on the bottom, I would date this c. 1918 or so.... and dived bowl with sterling base is nicely wheel cut with a wheat motif and I would think it dates c. 1950 or so...

A Little Framing

Gentle Friends, a while back I took a few pieces in to get framed and over the weekend I picked up two of them...

... the first piece is this small etching I found in a consignment shop. It's by the California artist Jeanette Maxfield Lewis (1894-1982) and probably dates to the mid-1930's.  She was born in Oakland, went to art schools here in the Bay area and NYC, married and lived in Fresno and had a home in Pebble Beach.  She is known for California scenes from all over the state.  With all that said, I bought it just because I liked it, I like landscapes and farm scenes and this little piece ( it's only about 3 1/2 x 2 1/2) just appealed to me on every level.  It was only after I got it home and did some research that I found all the info about the artist.  I am sure this image is a scene from San Joaquin Valley around Fresno were she lived.
___________________

This second piece is something I stitched a while back and originally thought I would frame it myself in an antique frame.  That didn't work out since I couldn't find the old frame and just went with getting it framed in an "antique" style frame.  It's hard to see but that is a small worn gold stripe that kind of adds to the "age" of the piece.  The chart is from Beth Twist over at Heartstring Samplery, "Baby it's Cold Outside."  As I get the other pieces back from the framers I'll post them ...

A Little Stitchin'

Gentle Freinds, stitching away on Apostles Creed... here's a pretty craptastic snap of where I am at the moment...

... a pretty significant floss change I've made is with the letters.  They are supposed to be stitched in GAST "Harvest Basket."  I stitched the first line with the Harvest Basket from my stash and it just was too pale and I didn't care for how it looked so I frogged it all out and went back to my stash and pulled some different colors... I've settled on another GAST color "Dried Thyme."

A New Little Start

Gentle friends, well, I've finally landed on a piece to start... I hemmed and hawed about a couple of samplers...  trying to make a decision I started to kit them up and sort of saw where I was with my stash and what I was missing... so I moved towards a great piece that's been in the "to do" pile for quite a while...

.... it's another Heartstring Samplery piece... "Apostle's Creed."  Here's my little bit of a start...

... I'm stitching this piece on 40ct Vintage Light Examplar with the recommended floss (more or less).  Of course, I've already made some changes to the piece.  In my stash, I couldn't find a piece of linen long enough... almost long enough...but no cigar!!  So, since this is a band type sampler I just went in and clipped out a couple of "bands" and then took the other bands and just rearranged them to suit me... so now I'm a happy camper.  The picture makes the linen look really mottled, I think it was the flash that made the colors pop... it's not really this "cloudy " looking.

A Little Thrifting

Gentle Friends, over the weekend I found a few fun things...

... I was as surprised as anyone.... so here's what I found.... some great mid-century pieces - a black "Couroc" type tray with a heavy sterling silver border, and a couple of small sized vases.  I also found a transferware plate from St. Augustine of the "Old City Gate"... the border contains oranges and orange blossoms with 5 cartouches that include the Hotel Ponce de Leon, the Castillio de San Marcos, the Hotel Cordova, The Alcazar and the Old Cathedral.  It's a plate I've seen before and wanted since I lived in Florida... and truth be told it's one of the few places I would ever move to if and when I think about retirement.  It's a lovely little historic city I've visited many times and would revisit in a heartbeat!!

A Little Marketing

Gentle Friends, this weekend was Gay Pride here by the Bay and Rico and I played "Gay Hide" instead...which involved us circumventing all of the craziness in the Civic Center downtown area and the Castro .... after Mass on Sunday we headed away from the City and hit one of our favorite Famers Markets out in the "Burbs"...

... it's high Summer here in California and the temps are a'risin' all around the Bay area and the San Joaquin Valley...

... we ran into Cecilia's Gardens Farm Stand from Mill Valley, a small town just across the Golden Gate Bridge.... and we picked up some scrumptious Bread and Butter pickles...

... and then stopped for some local honey from Marshall's...

... we also picked up some fruit....

... and I couldn't pass on some Collard greens.... which we had Sunday evening, delicious!!

... and as we left the Market we picked up flowers for the house... it's a great FM and we really like going here - and we'll be back!!

A Little Stitchin'

Gentle Freinds, here's a snap of where I'm at on MFV...

... I've not really changed much as I've stitch along.... except, and you knew there'd be an exception... is the little heart I stitched to dot the "I" in the word comic.  It's a really fun piece to work on...and now that I'm at the last third of this piece I'm thinking what might be the next piece to work on...not too sure.  :)

A Little Summer

Gentle Friends, it wouldn't be the first day of Summer without my posting a bit of lovely Vivaldi...... from the Four Seasons...  Summer......

... Vivaldi's Concerto for solo baroque violin and strings in G Minor performed on original instruments by Cynthia Freivogel and the Early Music Ensemble Voices of Music.  It lasts about 11:36 minutes but it's such a beautiful piece of music it's worth a listen!  Enjoy!

A Little Thrifting

Gentle Friends, there's not been too many things out there to bring home.  I've been making the rounds and "pickins' is slim" to say the least.... however, at one of the Antique Collectives (Antique Malls) out here on Valencia Street, I found this...

...  great frame c. 1900.  I really like the brass mounted glass "jewels" on each corner... I popped the cabinet card that was in it out... and popped the photo of my Grand Mother (L) and her sister my great Aunt Mary (R) as children in place.  It was taken in Galesville Wisconsin in the winter of 1899.  I've looked for years for a frame that would be appropriate and as with most things... perseverance pays off.  Now, I need to get this sucker on the wall somewhere.....

We headed out to dinner Sunday evening to a fun Mexican restaurant...

... The Margarita Factory is one of two Mexican places owned by the same guy and I am sure that the other location is just as good and totally as fun as this one in Hazel Dell!  If you're in the Vancouver area I would really recommend this place!!

... when we sat down I ordered a "Trashcan" to drink not knowing that it came with an energy drink... the description was not as clear as it could have been... basically, it's a Long Island Ice tea with blue Curacao and then tipped into it is an energy drink... interesting taste.....

... for dinner my sister had a bowl of Taco Soup that looked really delicious!!

... and I ordered a Seafood Chimichanga... which comes with a great creamy wine/mushroom sauce... not too sure how Mexican it is but it was really tasty!!

.... we hit "Killer Burger" for lunch, this is another local chain in the Portland area and one in Scottsdale AZ

... I got a "Meathead" and it was a super burger!!  All the burgers come with bacon and fries!!
