Tick, Tick, Tick..... 51 Days Left

GR&DF you were so sweet with your very kind comments about our "getups" for the party. As you can plainly see I am not one for the over the top outfit - Usually I am just a plain Jane wall flower when it comes to dressing up. I am a very casual person - jeans (be they blue or black) a clean pressed shirt, and a pair of Converse and I am good to go - and I mean for just about every occasion. If I get into a pair of chinos it is probably a white tie affair!! For the shoes - since I broke my foot in the south of France a few years ago, I can only wear comfortably Converse shoes - all my nice shoes gather dust due to how when I have on a pair the right foot is just this side of torture tight! Enough of that.....

I really haven't that much to say today - except that - can you believe that only a short 51 days and it will be Christmas!! Once again it is racing up with alarming speed. We where in Walgreen's yesterday and the seasonal aisle was jammed packed with treats - so of course how could I resist picking up this bag of cheer.....

Delicious minty M&M's. Now I am not a fan of the M&M, except the peanut butter ones. I prefer Reeses Pieces, but these suckers are minty chocolate and that sold me instantly! I love mint - peppermint is a favorite!! My favorite minty things would have to be in cocktail form and the top two cocktails are - a Stinger and Grass Hopper - mmmmm good and slurpity slurp!!!

Last night I was working on a Christmas Ornament and watching a Christmas movie - "Scrooge" - 1951 - a top notch version starring Alistair Sim. If you are longtime reader of my babel you may recall that a favorite story of mine is "A Christmas Carol." In addition to the written word I also enjoy the movie versions of the story. There are plenty variations of this story from just plain awful to very superior versions out there and I love them all. I probably have 12 different DVD versions in my DVD heap. I usually have a Scroogefest during the Holidays and I think there was a small Scroogfest last Sunday when I watched two different version so ACC (A Christmas Carol) - the 1935 and 1938 versions where screened - neither of these versions are all that but they do have their moments. I am sure that I will see them again before Christmas and I will have a major Scroogefest 2010 at some point!! I know that Rico just dreads this but tough toenails!!!

There you go sports fans!!
Thank you again for stopping by and leaving those sweet comments!! Do come again!

Take care,
edgar

  1. I love browsing the holiday isle of Walgreen's! Minty M&Ms? I'll have to look for those. Another minty chocolate favorite of mine in the winter is Starbuck's Peppermint Mochas! YUM!

  2. Glad to hear you prefer the Reese's Pieces! I work at The Hershey Co. in Hershey PA and we can have all the candy we want (while at work)- great place for a diabetic to work!

  3. Ho, boy, do I love mint so much so that one of Marc's nicknames for me is "Minty" :P

If I weren't on a diet, I'd already have a bag or two of those minty m&ms! I love the way the minty-ness goes with that candy shell. Someone told me (an M&Ms employee) that they make Dark Mint M&Ms, too! Wouldn't you love to find some of those!?

Can it really only be 51 days away? I'm just waiting and waiting for an ornament kit to be restocked at my LNS.

As for Christmas Carol, I have an itch in my brain that says I've mentioned this to you before, but over all I'm not much of a CC (or Dickens, for that matter) fan. BUT, I love the musical version (from the 70's?) called "Scrooge", I think. As for tormenting Rico, I agree that it's tough toenails. My dear friend from High School called the morning of Nov 1st to ask if I had started playing our favorite Christmas Album, which is a collection of "Christmas Carols and Songs" made as a tie-in to a 90's Japanese animated TV show. The songlist includes such dubious hits as "Last Christmas", "White Christmas", a version of "Santa Clause is Comin' to town" rendered mostly in Japanese, and even a piercing/grating/rousing rendition of "When the Saints Go Marching In". It is sung by the talent who provide the spoken voices of the characters (junior high school girls) with the idea that they are in character. (A common practice there.) Incidentally, it remains the biggest selling Christmas album there to this day. Now, I would really hate to be accused of mocking another person, but when it's not good, it's so bad it's good: In White Christmas, the ear can discern no difference between (where the treetops)"Glisten" or (and children)"Listen"--both have been fashioned into an entirely new, yet identical word.

We're inordinately fond of it, though somehow Marc doesn't share our enjoyment after the 3rd or 4th run-through. Each year we threaten to have a well-watered (can this be the year I make mulled wine?) karaoke party in which each song will be sung no fewer than 3 times (One solo each, and then a duet).

In all seriousness, my true (or at least recommendable) favorites are Carol of the Bells sung a cappella and Peggy Lee's "Happy Holidays".

  4. Excellent choice of candy! I will search for these right away. Really, just 51 days? It seems longer. I better get on to some ornament stitching, but "Upstairs/Downstairs" keeps calling me away.

  5. The next time you are in the mood for a minty cocktail, try a peppermint martini! Talk about yum (assuming it's made well of course). Since you are a Scrooge fan, are you going to see the Disney version of CC that's coming out this week? I'm taking my kids...hoping to get them hooked on Dickens.

  6. I love chocolate minty things as well! I can't really get into the Christmas spirit yet but I was happy to see Starbucks has their peppermint mocha back!! I got one this morning! :) Are you going to see the new animated version of "A Christmas Carol?" It looks pretty good!

  7. A Scroogefest! What a delightful concept. I was commenting to hubby last night that Charles Dickens could not have forseen the impact his story would have beyond his realm. It would have to be recreated about every other year in some cinematic form or another. My boys groan, but Christmas means that the Muppets Christmas Carol is dragged out every year for compulsory veiwing. Last year I found a copy of 'The little Drummer Boy' - the late 60's version with the puppet/animation - I remember that and Charlie Brown's Christmas being the ONLY Christmas movies shown on TV for years when I was growing up. (It wasn't as great as I remembered it - and the boys were certainly unimpressed to the point of incredulity) Thank you for the memories! 51 days??? hmmm time to get the decorations out...

  14. My two favorite versions of "A Christmas Carol" are the one with Patrick Stewart and a staged reading that I've seen on PBS a few times with just Martin Sheen and James Earl Jones reading the story - excellent!

  15. I love the two with Albert Finney and Alistair Sims. Reginald Owen isn't back but I prefer the other two best. Can't wait to see the new one.
