A Post with a Bunch of snaps

GR&DF I am glad you enjoyed the snaps of my past - I "borrowed" them from the Internet and when I posted them they cropped oddly and I am sorry about that. Addie - what a good idea about a sampler using the Blount-Bridgers House. I so enjoyed working in that space. Our offices where downstairs in the raised English Basement so it was always cool and comfortable. The House proper was both an Historic Home and Art Gallery. As Director and then Curator my main focus was art and art history which I really enjoyed.

Yesterday was Farmers Market Wednesday and it was blustery, cold and bright at the market. Walking over to the Civic Center I pass a lovely old theater called the Orpheum, 1926. It is a lovely old building in a pseudo French style - right now they are playing "Wicked." Here is a snap of the front -

I also thought the side advertising was quite interesting and here is a snap of that -

I loved how the shadows look against the wall.
At the Farmers market was a bounty of Autumnal goodies....... like....

......these beautiful grapes - how can you beat the colour on these lovelies!!!
And there were lots of Nopale fruit -

I really like the name "Cactus Figs" so descriptive.
Here is another stall with some fruit of the vine -

One of my favorite grapes to get are champagne grapes - so very small and tender sweet!!
"And they swan, and they swam , right over the dam" kept running through my head - as I got this snap.........

I knew eventually I would get one - and no yelling, nothing was said to me when I snapped this. The odd colouring is from the tarp they have that covers the large double stall the fish people set up in.

Last night we ran out to the Mall for birthday presents for my niece and nephew - and stopped into the Hallmark Store. They have most of their Christmas stuff up and it is truly a festive place!!! I took this snap of the ornament wall -

Sorry about the crappy snap - but my little camera just can not compensate for the low nasty mall lighting and it looks like the store is a cave, it really wasn't!! Now, I do prefer home made ornies, but some of the super cute ornies that Hallmark has put this year are just amazing!! We also stopped into Borders and I picked up two mags - Cross-Stitch and Needlework and the JCS Hallowe'en Issue.

I had no intention of getting either of these but after seeing the Sampler on the CSN issue and the Primitive Needle piece in JCS I knew I had to have both. On the sampler in CSN I will need to rechart the quote because I do not care for the lettering. The JCS Hallowe'en issue has the seasonal ornaments - which I could live without - I do like the La D Da one but that was no reason to get the issue, it was the article about Lisa of "Primitive Needle" and the chart for Halloween Revelry that sold it for me!!

After we got home and settled in I picked up on my Exchange stitching. I also watched a really delightful movie - "Miss Potter" - 2006 - starring Renee Zellweger, Ewan McGregor and Emily Watson. I am not a big fan of Renee, but this movie couldn't have been any more charming and well done. Wonderfully shot and acted I thought it was completely enchanting!! It is a bio pic of Beatrix Potter's life. The first half of the film moves back and forth from the 1870's to 1902 in Beatrix's life and all she went through getting her books published. The second half is her life after publication of Tale of Peter Rabbit and the 20 or so books she eventually wrote. The film fleshed out the Peter Rabbit and company with bits of animation that added so much to the film - I can't say enough good things and would HIGHLY recommend this film!! I have read many reviews saying that Renee was wrong for this part but I disagree - she really did a wonderful job bringing Miss Potter and her world to life.

There you go sports fans!! I do thank you for the kind comments and for just stopping by!!

Take care,
edgar

  1. Edgar, thanks for a lovely update. The grapes look luscious. Does the Farmer's Market go all year in San Fran? Ours will be ending here in Maine shortly.

I agree about Miss Potter - it was a delightful movie! The animated Peter was totally charming.

  2. I really love your photos of the market stalls...I never see things like that around here.

I am so glad you enjoyed Miss Potter. I loved the movie even though it was so poignant at the end and made me cry.

  3. Another great post! I am amazed at the wonderful pictures that you can take. Mine always come out bad, at least they seem to post that way. The old theatre is great! We have a couple of old ones here in town still running. We have seen a few things there. One of my favorites was the live play of " A Christmas Story". It was really great to see and boy they sure can switch scenes and props fast! Have a great day!

  4. I enjoy your photos very much Edgar! Oh my those grapes look so delicious! Halloween Revelry is what sold me on that issue of JCS too. Isn't it a wonderful sampler?

Miss Potter is such an enjoyable movie! I am not a big Renee fan either, but I did like her in that one. Another one that she really is superb in is Cinderella Man with Russell Crowe. It's a story of boxer Jimmy Braddock, and very good!

  5. I couldn't agree more! Miss Potter is a wonderful movie and I thought Renee was just perfect. It's a shame there aren't more movies like this in today's market. A very dear friend loaned me the DVD and as soon as I'm able I'll be buying my own copy-it's worth watching over and over again.

  7. OK, that settles it. I'm moving to SanFran. How do you get anything done out there with all of that gorgeous scenery?

Ahhhhh, Miss Potter. I'm the only person on the planet that didn't know a damn thing about her, but I loved the movie!

  8. I love-love-love those grape pics! Wonderful! I also really enjoyed seeing the building pics from yesterday, as well. When I think about working with art, it seems like a wonderful fun job, yet I bet it had lots of responsibility and stress! I'll try not to be TOO envious of you!

Ooh; JCS Halloween issue. It is pretty hard to get those (surprisingly) around here. For some reason, I don't think the Bookshops carry them--or maybe they fly off the shelves too fast. At any rate, I need to see about ordering that one. I am so curious to know what the La D Da looks like!

  9. Lovely piccies. I adore Miss Potter: It is one of my all time favourite films ever and the animations just make it perfect. Good taste lol!
I am very jealous of how easily you can buy stitchy mags there...Ireland has not really discovered x-stitch yet...I am working on that though ;-)

  10. Oh to have a Farmer's Market like your pictures nearby. When I was in Wisconsin they had a pretty nice one but nothing like your's. The one here leaves alot to be desired.

I loved that movie too! I watched it a couple of years ago and immediately bought it. I like to watch movies like this one that tell us of someone's life. Thanks for the great review of it so maybe now others will watch.

  13. Edgar...love the post and snaps as always!!

I have "Miss Potter" on my list of the must see movies. After that glowly recommendation, I will definitely move it to the top.

I bought the JCS Halloween issue too, and I stitched the "Halloween" with the pumpkin for the "O." It was so quick to stitch and turned out perfect. I had an old piece of linen from an antique store that I tea-dyed; it was just waiting for that pattern I tell ya...I am going to finish it as a pillow/door hanger!

I so enjoy reading your posts...until later...

    HAPPY STITCHIN'

  16. I loved Miss Potter and have watched it several times! The whole movie is so well done and with great actors that it does portray her perfectly. Renee is a perfect cast for this part and I don't think she received enough credit for it. JMHO :)

  17. Nice pictures as always! Those fishies are spectacular! I have both those mags as well -- the Primitive Needle Halloween piece is just so nice! As for the Beatrix Potter movie -- wasn't it wonderful? I had to go look up the relationship between Beatrix and the Ewan McGregor character afterwards. So sad. I liked both Renee Z and Ewan in this one. :D

  23. I'm totally with you on Miss Potter. I love this movie so much and have watched it many times. And you are so right - Rene Zellweger is doing an absolutely great job as Beatrix. Whenever I stitch one more motif on my BP sampler I watch the movie. Maybe that's the reason why I haven't finished the sampler yet - because I want to continue watching the movie while stitching on it, lol.

  24. Hi, i loved your snaps of the market, just the kind of photos i would take (with DH trying to pretend that he isn't really with me, lol) Unfortunatly we don't have too many markets in my area like that, mores the pity.

I totally agree about the Miss Potter movie!(i'm not a fan of Rennee either)but I just loved it too! Although i did cry at the end.

    Loved your blog BTW :-)
