Scrooge-a-palooza 2012

Gentle Friends last night I began my annual "Scrooge-a-thon" or as it has come to be know in my little brain.....  "Scrooge-a-palooza!"

I hauled out all the version I had of "A Christmas Carol" and started in on the oldest... "Scrooge" - 1935 starring Sir Seymour Hicks as Ebenezer scrooge.  This film made in England at the beginning of the sound era is a bit creaky in places but it is still a charming little sugar plum of the season!!

After this ACC was over I flipped on regular TV over to AMC to catch another classic Christmas film "Miracle on 34th Street" - 1947 -

Now, I love this film, but they were showing the "colorized" version which is just beyond the pale....  so after a few minutes of my eyes burning in protest... I flipped back to the DVD player and popped in my "correct" Black and White version and watched that instead - and thoroughly enjoyed it!!!

Tonight I'll be watching -  the 1938 "A Christmas Carol" and probably one of the two best versions of ACC  ever put on film - the 1951 "Scrooge."

  4. I'm with you Edgar. I turned on the AMC colorized version the other night and just couldn't watch it. I like the B/W version, or as you put it, the correct version so much better. Tonight I think we're going to pull out our George C Scott "A Christmas Carol" to enjoy.

  6. Edgar, just love the holiday/Christmas movies especially the older ones, but I am also enjoying some of the newer ones that come out on Hallmark and Lifetime.

  7. Isn't it funny how everyone has their own favorite version of Scrooge? My husband is adamant that the 1970 Albert Finney version is the only one anyone should watch. He has a copy of it and watches it several times during the Christmas season.

  8. Good luck with the marathon!! My DH loves "A Christmas Carol" but we don't have nearly as many versions as you. I'll be watching for some of them on TV. Of the modern ones, we watch the one with Henry Winkler playing Scrooge.

  9. The Alastair Sim version! One of the best : ) Just love the Scrooge movies! Which is the other one you consider to be the best? I must admit I really love the Muppets one. Michael Caine is brilliant in that role : )

  10. I have them all...even Mr Magoo how funny is that....I think picking one fav is too hard...But I said before...the Muppets and "light the lamp not the rate" is a hoot. For closest to book that would be Patrick Stewart version...but then again.........Enjoy your marathon..I start mine the day after Thanksgiving.......

  11. I love A Christmas Carol too...the Alistair Sim one is great but I guess my favorite is the one with George C. Scott. I love Christmas movies and just about to start on my stack too! I'll be starting out with Meet Me in St Louis - not exactly a Christmas movie theme but a lot of Christmas scenes in it. Nothing like Judy Garland singing Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas....but be prepared with a box of tissues handy...it tears at the heart that song.....

  12. We just agree to disagree about the 1951 version, right? Luv ya!

  13. Sim is my favorite! On the 16th on TCM they are showing "A Carol for Christmas," a version starring Peter Sellers and Eva Marie Saint not seen since the 1960s. I've already got my DVR set to tape it. It was directed by Rod Serling so I have no idea what to expect.

  15. My favorite is the Muppets version. So many great "Muppets-only" lines and wonderfully-singable music!

  16. It's the 1951 version of Scrooge that I watch every Christmas Eve! I think Alastair Sim's performance is perfect in every way I imagine Scrooge to be and I never get tired of watching it! Enjoy :)

  18. Totally agree with you on the "colorization" of b/w films. They are a disappointment! Take care...
