An Older WIP and a Cake

Gentle Readers and Dear Friends well today starts our 4 or 5 days of on and off rains...  it is damp out there now - just a sprinkle...  so we'll see what actually happens!!
__________

The stitching I did over the weekend - that I can show - was on a old WIP - I see it all the time in the basket o'WIPs, but just never reach for it.  I thought to myself I should get on it as I could actually finish it this year!!  The piece is Shore's of Hawk Run Hollow - a great piece I really like and for the life of me can not figure out why I don't stitch on it more.  Well, I got quite a bit done....  here's an over all shot as it stands now-

I really should have taken a before shot to show from where it came - I got all the "water" under the large ship in the middle done - and I finished up Block 8.  I am still not sure how to finish out Block 7... I want to have it more personal with some sort of family info... and one of my latest obsessions is Ancestry.com - so I am gathering up lots of Family info.  Some of it I had no clue about.  Like one of my middle names - not a single person in my family I ever asked knew where it came from.  I have found it was one of my GGG Grandmother's maiden names.  I kinda knew it was going to be a last name but just could not place it on any "Branch" of my Tree.

And here is a better shot of Block 8 -

I don't know why but this has always been one of my favorite Blocks on this piece.  Now only three to complete and Block 7 - and I'll have a finish.  Then I can start either Autumn at HRH or Christmas at HRH....  always looking to the next project!!

I posted the recipe for Pineapple Upside Down Cake over at Blacksheep Bakes - you can click HERE to go there.  It is super easy.

That's about it for today sports fans.  Thanks for stopping by do stop again!!

Take care,

  2. Great to see this being stitched on again Edgar. It's one of my favourite designs, I can't put my finger on why, I don't even live near the sea although I love going to the coast whenever I can. I keep umming and aahing as to buying it myself to stitch, meanwhile I'll enjoy watching yours grow.

  3. The shore is looking great. I found that it was easiest for me to stitch on this piece when I was in a beachy, summery mood. The rest of the year, I really wasn't interested in it. Maybe you just need to put on some flipflops and shorts to get you in the mood to work on it! Just kidding.

How cool that you finally know exactly where your middle name came from. And how funny that the name stuck with the family enough for you to receive it, yet not enough for anyone to know why.

    Happy ancestor hunting!

  5. Edgar, this is gorgeous! I love how the colors look against the fabric. You wouldn't happen to remember the name of the fabric you're using, would you? And are you using the recommended silks or something else?

    Thanks!

  7. Shores is looking fantastic!! Congrats on the progress. And I think it's great that you're looking into your family history - it's such a treasure to know where you came from. My dad's research has been invaluable in working on my Anniversaries of the Heart piece.

  8. Beautiful WIP, Edgar! Should we all start to guess what your middle name is now? =) Or have you mentioned it and I missed it....

  9. Oh Edgar your sampler is fabulous! I have this one on my WIP list this year too. I love this sampler, but I am struggling with the ship block. I just need a weekend to finish it up, and get motivated again.
How wonderful to find out where your middle name came from. Ancestry.com is a wonderful website. I do some genealogy too, and wish I had more time to devote to it. There is a neat feeling knowing who we are connected to, isn't there?
Okay, I've been meaning to write you an e-mail for several weeks now, and I'll get on it today! Thanks for being patient.
The cake looks wonderful. I avoid baking, because when I do, I do most of the eating. LOL!
    Hugs to you!

  10. LOVE Shores of HR!!! That's great that you nearly finished! Finding out where your middle name came from must have been a "WOW" moment!! It must be great to be able to figure out your family tree! I've tried but didn't get very far...my Russian side goes back as far as my great grandparents...that's it! All records were destroyed during the revolution :(

  23. Hi Edgar, Thanks for the yummy cake recipe :)
Love your HRH stitching. All of the HRH are so amazing, the stories they tell. Isn't it fun researching the family history? I have done that for many years for my family, thru Ancestry.com and the help of relatives. From going thru boxes of family photos I was able to find records from the 1800s! It is great to find these old treasures!

  24. Edgar, I didn't know this chart existed! I promptly went to my favorite on-line store (sadly we don't have any needlework stores in business in my area) and bought it! I can't wait to get it. I love designs with an antique nautical themes.
I would love to know what everyone does when their eyesight starts to decline. I'm in between store bought glasses and prescription. 28 count is the smallest I can see right now. Do magnifiers work? Which ones?

  25. Edgar, your Shores looks GREAT!! I hope you'll keep going until it's done! I just started Shores at the beginning of the year, after finishing VoHRH. I'm only on my second block, but have to say this is maybe my favorite project ever. I just posted my progress a couple of days ago, pop on over and check it out. Are you using silks, or DMC? Are you using the called-for linen?
I am anxious to try your pineapple upside down cake recipe!

  26. Edgar,
I love Shores...it's my favority CHS pattern! I have it and I splurged on the fabric for it. Are you stitching it on the suggested fabric? You are motivating me to start it. I love your blog, learning about your life in San Francisco and those adorable who-hounds. Your recipes look delicious too! Thanks for sharing your stitching with us.

  27. Just found your blog and glad I was treated to a peak at the SoHRH sampler! I finished my Village last year and just LOVE staring at it in its framed glory. I've been hemming and hawing over this one so much - just might have to take the plunge. Look forward to more :)

  31. Looks like another weekend will have a beautiful finish! Love your fabric choice!

  32. I love that block too! It's my favorite because it reminds me of the rocky east coast, especially Maine where we do a lot of vacationing. What fabric are you stitching this piece on. I have had it in my stash for years but can't decide on a fabric.

  33. Gorgeous stitching ... as always : )

  34. Love this piece Edgar! You are almost there! What fabric is that? It's perfect for this piece!

  35. Beautiful stitching on Shores! The red houses in block 8 remind me of some of the fishing cabins and homes in Peggy's Cove, Nova Scotia.

  36. Thank you for sharing your progress on Shores. I've been lucky to have been gifted this chart and pre started block 1 on tea-dyed aida. I've picked up and finished block one, have started block 2 - using DMC, but I guess that from time to time, some of my hand-dyeds are going to find their way into the stitch. I have an ancestor who died at sea and have already charted his name ready for block 8 when I get there.
Good luck on your ancestry search. (btw - did the postcards arrive safely?)
