It doesn't look like much was accomplished but the triple line surrounding everything was just never ending - or so it seemed... and I was determined to get that part finished.

With all the summer fruits and vegetables coming in from the Valley we made a point of getting to our little Farmers Market on Grove Street in the Western addition.....  I got some snaps..

 The tomatoes were just beautiful..

 We picked up both peaches and some of the gorgeous early cherries....

and our flower lady had these great purple and gold bunches of flowers.....  ECU colours...  GO Pirates!!!

Weekend Loss

A Memorial Day Post

Gentle Readers and Dear Friends just a quick post to wish you all a safe Memorial Day Weekend!!  Nothing going on here and no great plans - except to enjoy the long 4 Day Weekend!!  WooHoo - 4 days off with lots of movies and stitching....  and I think I should clean something around the house.

A Movie Post

Gentle Readers and Dear Friends thanks so much for your kind comments on yesterdays Post.   Also, thank you for all the great ideas for the Hallowe'en RR - I just hit a wall thinking about that piece - I would guess that's why it has be languishing in the "completed" pile for so long.  I worked some on Mary Ann last night - just the triple line surround - not very interesting so I didn't take a picture.

Over the weekend I had a great DVD from Netflix arrive - "Chaplin" - 1992 - starring Robert Downey Jr, Geraldine Chaplin, Paul Rhys, John Thaw, Moira Kelly, Anthony Hopkins, Dan Aykroyd, Marisa Tomei and Kevin Kline.

 The film is told in long flashback and although not a strict Bio-pic it was very entertaining and quite informative.  I thoroughly enjoyed it - it was quite a longish film at about 144 minutes, but they could have added another 1/2 hour and still not cover every aspect of his life.  Robert Downey Jr did a top notch job portraying Chaplin and it was a stroke of genius to use Geraldine Chaplin to play her paternal grandmother - I think is a super film and you will not be disappointed.  Here is the Films trailer.......

Weekend Stuff

Gentle Readers and Dear Friends sorry to not have gotten a post up on Friday, but after trying twice to Post one - I just gave up - Blogger was bugging out for some reason and kept deleting my Posts.....  I just didn't have the time or energy to fight with it so I didn't!!

I think the high point for the entire weekend was the eclipse yesterday afternoon - not that it got dark at all - just the lighting changed to a very odd grey cast - and I could see the change from a seated position and that meant I didn't have to move - I like the not moving aspect of that!!!!  

We did our usual running around Saturday, starting off with the early run out to breakfast and then on to the weekly grocery shopping......  after stopping off at home to drop off the haul from the store - I grabbed the Estate Sale list and we were off again.  There where four Sales this weekend that I wanted to hit - they were all mostly a Bust!!  Along with the Sales and hitting the usual Thrift/Consignment Stores - I found few things...

I found the large "Indian Tree" platter at a Goodwill, I have a medium one already.  I really like the Johnson Bros interpretation of this old pattern, and will pick it up whenever I see some, I found the little "oyster" shaped Japanese? dish at a Thrift Shop.  Here is a close of it....

and the backside...

It fits in my hand and is the size of an oyster shell, the gold is still in great condition as is the rest of the hand work, but what could it have been used for???  We also stopped off at Amoeba records and DVDs and that's where I picked up the 1st Season of "All in the Family" a show I have always enjoyed.

Baking yesterday I had a hankering for some Brownies ....

I used my go to recipe I got off of Allrecipes, I have posted it before  - They are Called "Best Brownies" and where originally posted by Angie - simply the best!!!!  The two changes I make is to prepare the pan by buttering and then using cocoa powder instead of flour, to keep them from sticking - and - a teaspoon of Powdered espresso to the batter to kick up the chocolate.

On the stitching front I finishedup my Exchange piece - and it turned out pretty good, if I do say so myself.  Once it reaches its final Home I'll post a snaperoo.  I also worked on Mary Ann and finished up the wonky "vine" that encircles the verse....

Now, to start to work on the flower/strawberry bits....

I had an email from a reader about a older RR piece I worked on - I get more emails about this piece from the Header Shot - so I got it out and took a good look - and a snap - and think I should fill it in as there is quite a bit of "white" space still left....  any suggestions??????  here is a snap for a memory jogger....

A Glenn Close Evening

Gentle Readers and Dear Friends...  not too much to report, I have been stitching away on an exchange piece, so not snaps of that, yet.

Today's post will be all about film, and not just any films, but three films by that stunning actress Glenn Close....

This award winning talent on screen is just phenomenal!!  Last night by some quirky coincidence turned out to be a very Close evening of her films.  In the mail I got a Netflix DVD of her film "Albert Nobbs" - 2011.  

This is her most recent Award nominated film to date - and what a stupendous effort - starring along with Glenn Close is Janet McTeer (who was magnificent in "Songcatcher" - 2000), and Pauline Collins. A most interesting and unusual film with so many layers and connecting stories that I was totally blown away!!  Well worth a look.

Now, back to my evening...  I usually don't start a Netflix film until about 7:30 or 8, I usually play pop the button flipping around the channels and bitch about TV being so awful for a good long while, you get the picture.  Last night while flipping through the bazillion channels I came up against two other Close films.... The first is one of my all time favoirte films "Dangerous Liaisons" - 1988 - 

I love everything about this film  - the look, the story, the acting - just everything!!!  I have probably seen it about 100 times over the years.  I watched this for about an hour or so... then flipped around again and landed on another Close favorite....  "Paradise Road" - 1997 -

a film where she also worked with Pauline Collins - coincidence, I think not. - So I watched the last half of this film before starting "Albert Nobbs."

All three of these films are top notch - and there are many more Glenn Close films to see, from "Mars Attacks"  - 1996 - to "Evening"  - 2007 - she even did a bit part in the film "Hook" - 1991 - hard to pick out, but she is there.  She is part of Hook's crew.

If you get the chance you can't go wrong with a Glenn Close film 

- always top quality acting every time!!!

It's a Cold Tuesday Morning

Gentle Readers and Dear Friends thanks so very much for warming up my morning with your great comments.  I have put aside Mary Ann for a bit to work on an Exchange Piece, but she will be back soon.  I am really enjoying working on her - she is not complicated, no specialty stitches - just full cross stitching - I got a couple of emails asking how I decided on this particular sampler to work on..... I think the reason I was drawn to this sampler is the second verse on the piece - it is the first line from one of my favorite Christmas Carols - "Hark, the Herald angels sing...."  Here is a great version of that song from St Paul's in London.....

Over the weekend I watched a really good film - a difficult film, but an excellent film - "Wit" - 2001 - starring Emma Thompson (a super actress)...

Thompson plays a tough Professor of metaphysical poetry - specializing in the Holy Sonnets of John Donne who is diagnosed with Stage IV Ovarian cancer.  Be advised, this is a tough film to watch; but also know that if you choose to do so, you will be rewarded with an experience that is invaluable and unforgettable.  From the first words spoken in the film "You have cancer" to the last voice over "Death be not proud" it is a journey well worth taking.  At a short 98 minuets the impact will stay with you for a very long time.

Sampler Stitching, A Mystery Start and some Thrifty Finds

Gentle Readers and Dear Friends thanks so much for all your kind comments about Fridays Post.  Over the weekend we did our usual things - starting off Friday evening at the mall.  Macy's was having one of their perpetual "One Day Sales" so we took advantage of it and picked up some K-Cups for the Keurig - gotta love a sale!!

I stitched on a few pieces over the last couple of days...

Mary Ann got quite a bit of attention......  and I joined a SAL so I started that piece...

 

"Mystery SAL al Castello" from Niky's Creations.  I am using a 36ct piece of Vintage Meadow Rue and the called for DMC.  I think this will be a great SAL.. I am loving the birds!!

I also got to a few Thrift/Consignment Shops and picked up a few do-dads...

I love the child's mug with the enameled rabbits, and you know my passion for English Transferware.... I had to have this lovely dinner plate.  "A World Lit by Fire" is one of my all time favorite books - I have worn out two paperback copies and when I came across this 1st Edition hardback for a $1 how could I pass it up - and the Christmas book, well you know me and Christmas!!

As you know Rico has the green thumb at our house - and to prove it once again I have this lovely thing blooming away...

This little orchid is pretty old and has bloomed every year for the past few years - if it was left in my care it would have given up the ghost a loooong time ago!!

 - and - I baked up this pretty terrific cake yesterday.....

It is a "Caramel-Apple Cake" and comes from Barandie over at The Country Cook.  Only a few ingredients come together quickly and turn out a moist tasty cake that goes just great with coffee!!

Some Stitching and Some Stashing

Gentle Readers and Dear Friends I think the Mal Ware issue is finally cleared up - I have to give a big old THANK YOU to DaffyCat for finding the offending little bit and pointing it out to me - I certainly couldn't find it...  I did try and try again, but no luck....  now I hope that everything is back on an even keel!

I have been steadily stitching away on Mary Ann the last couple of nights and last night I thought would be no different - how wrong I was!  After dozing off and waking up about 6 or so times after dinner I hauled her out and snapped her into the old Q-snaperoo and was going to work on the second line of verse....  well, I counted and stitched and looked and counted again - and the "w" just was not where it was supposed to be.  

The other night after I stitched the "vine" bit along the top  - I found that in no way shape or form was it even  - it jumps from 7 to 8 back to 7  stitches all along the way.....  A light bulb went off might the sides follow that non-conformist stitching pattern??  I went back and re-counted the vine going down the left side - where I was counting off to set the "w" in place.  I found that in my haste, or numb scullery, I stitched the vine sections all at 7 up the 7 down then 7 up then - you get the picture....... or a picture is worth a 1000 words....

So it was a frog type evening - and all the stitching had to come out, I hate to waste the silk but what had to be done had to be done...... out came the vine, the flower bits and the leaves - this early in the game better to make it right than to fudge it later on!

Unlinking.....

Gentle Readers and Dear Friends thanks so much for letting me know about the issues that are still going on here with the Blog.  It is so irritating... I have tried every fix I can find on the Blog Help site or suggestion they make about .  i have also gone back to previous Posts and unlinked everything linked to any post for about 4 weeks back... I hope that helps.  any suggestions are more than welcome at this point as I have no idea what else I can do.  

The Google/Blog site insists that nothing is actually linked and that there are no real issues and that more that likely the site prompting the "Mal ware" Warning is extra sensitive Spam and Security programs being used.  Since I am still getting 100's of hits on Blacksheep with only a few emails still about the Warning - that not every body is getting that Warning.....  what's the opinion of you the reader ??????

I feel so out of the loop when it comes to Tech things and mechanical apparati - that when anything gets to going wrong or malfunctions it will send  me into a wild crazy temper every time.  I think it is the helplessness and the "at the mercy" of these dang things that throws me the biggest curve!!  Oh well...  lets hope for better working bits!

Last night the Netflix Pix was a really enjoyable film called "An Angel for May" - 2002 - starring Matthew Beard,Tom Wilkinson, Geraldine James and Anna Massey. 

 I had never heard of this TV film - and only got it because of the recommendation from Netflix - and -  I really enjoy Anna Massey and Tom Wilkinson.  I was very pleasantly surprised.  here is a nutshell IMBD blurb about the film...

 "Tom travels fifty years to the past after discovering a time machine. He meets May, a little orphan who needs help. Now that he knows his friends' fate and his own, he will try to reorder the events and change their history." 

 That's not a very accurate nutshell of the film as there is no "time machine" - what lets Tom travel back a forth in time is a "time portal."  Overall the film is really charming and worth a look - safe for any age  - and I hate to call it this but it is a great Family Film  - that tag is often the kiss of death for a film.

....  he is trying to cut back on caffeine (which stunned me!!) and wanted this great machine out of his house so it has come to live with us!!  I am loving it!!!  - and - there are way too many different kinds of drinks and flavours to try!!!!!!

A Movie Post and a Loss

In keeping with the movie/film theme today I wanted to mention two super films both with the same superior leading actress....

Meryl Streep

She is one of two or three top notch actresses working in Hollywood today - always bringing her A game to rolls she is in - with only one mis-step with the film "Mama Mia" her films are just wonderful.!!

The two films I screened recently are "The Iron Lady" and "One True Thing."  Both of her performances were nominated for an Oscar - with her winning Best Actress for "The Iron Lady."

The early film "One True Thing" - 1998 - she starred along with Renee Zellweger, William Hurt, Tom Everett Scott and Lauren Graham. 

The story is told in flashback by the daughter from her point of view.  There are some amazing performances in this film!!

The second Streep film is "The Iron Lady" - 2011 - she starred with Jim Broadbent, Susan Brown and Olivia Colman.

I really enjoyed this film with Streep playing and elderly Thatcher talking over things with her deceased husband and the film telling her story in flashback.  For this roll Streep won the Best Actress Oscar in addition a ton of other Awards - all well deserved.

A third film that needs a mention is "The Devil wears Prada" - 2006 - a really terrific film - not as good as the book, but a great one to see!!

There are lots of other great Streep films.... "Out of Africa," "Dancing at Lughnasa," "Death Becomes Her," "Sophie's Choice," "Kramer vs Kramer" and a early small part in "Julia."  All of these films are on DVD and all worth a look!!

Just about every morning as I am drinking my coffee and thinking about what to Blog about I usually flip through the news bits and pieces on AOL - this morning I came across a bit of very sad news....  Maurice Sendak author of "Where the Wild Things Are" has passed away....

1928-2012

The book "Where the Wild things Are" - was published in 1963 so it is as old as I am, and it was one of the first books I ever remember reading and looking at the pictures.  One of the great children's books of the 20th Century even winning the Caldecott Medal in 1964.

A Framed Piece and a New Start

Gentle Readers and Dear Friends I futzed a bit with the Blog look again and am getting close to what I want it to look like.  I am mulling over a new header picture..... but the column widths are getting there.  The whole "malware" issue I think has resolved itself - as I removed a few things that I think where causing the problems.

The first thing I want to show is a piece I did a couple of years ago that I finally had framed....

This is the "Beatrix Potter Companion Quaker" piece I personalized with wedding dates of my parents and grandparents.  Done on a mystery 32ct piece of over dyed linen using Belle Soie "Moss."  

Here is a close up of the frame...

I love the using a black frame to set the piece off.

I also wanted to show my new start....

 This is the "Mary Ann Hutton" Sampler - I am using a piece of 36ct "Days Gone By" linen and my conversion from the recommended DMC colours to my choice of Belle Soie.

We made it to a couple of Consignment/Thrift Shops of Saturday and I picked up a couple of things....

A slim volume of Truman Capote's Holiday stories and a great old blue & white bowl...  painted all around with scenes of Holland...

I would guess it is from the 1920's???  but who knows.

I baked up a great chocolate cake using the recipe from Octoberfarm 

for "The Best Chocolate Cake."  

 I followed the recipe exactly - except - and you knew there would be one...  I added a heaping teaspoon of espresso powder to the boiling water before adding it to the batter - I like the way that coffee "kicks" up the flavour of chocolate!!  It really is a scrumptious and easy cake to pull together!!!

A Quick Friday Post

Gentle Readers and Dear Friends thanks so much for alerting me to the issues here on Blacksheep.  The Malware thing ect.... I found that it was really not the Blog but an attachment to a link and that it shouldn't be an issue going forward - lets hope so!!

I did some futzing about here and changed up the look a bit.....  not sure if I like the changes, but will live with them for a while.  I know I can get used to anything I have to.... or I can just change things up again!!  :)

Yesterday I had my annual physical - Dr Knox couldn't find anything wrong with me - that;'s physical... not mental!!  :)   - all the blood work was fine - all the internal bits and pieces working fine - he did mention I could loose a bit of weight, but I already knew that!!  

After the appointment I went out side there was a storm approaching and when I got home I took a couple of snaps to show the clouds rolling in over the city....

We got very little rain from these clouds - but the winds picked up and it was blowing a gale for a good long while as a cold front moved in and it should stay cool/cold for the next couple of days.

I worked a bit on the new sampler and the colour palette I have settled on now I am really happy with - except a light green.... I may have to scrap it for another shade of green over the weekend....  there will defiantly be a picture on Monday....

A Really Terrific Film

Gentle Readers and Dear Friends it is Thursday Morning which means that Friday is just around the corner...  woo hoo!!! It's cold hear and gonna rain (supposedly) later on today.... typical weather here by the Bay.

Last night, in addition to a great film, I hauled out the new sampler I'm working on and made some decisions....  1. I was not happy with the colours - still loving the Belle soie as I always do - but not the combination of colours....and  2.  Really not very happy with the way it looks on the linen - although it's a great piece of 36ct "Vintage Magnolia" - so I knew I needed to do something drastic before I got much further into this piece - I scrapped the whole darn thing!!  I dug around again in the linen stash, pulled out a great piece of 36ct "Days Gone By" and changed out 4 more of the silks and re-started the border.  Needless to say I am now way happy and will stitch on in over the weekend and have a snap on Monday.  Sometimes you just got to start over!!

Now, the film last night was a newish DVD from Netflix - W.E. - 2011 - Starring  Abbie Cornish, James D'Arcy, Andrea Riseborough and Oscar Isaac. 

 

I thoroughly enjoyed this film and loved the way Madonna (Director) blended both stories of the past and the present together.  I also loved it when both the past and present bumped up against each other.  Although this film might not be for everyone and it is not a bio-pic by any stretch of the imagination - it is very interesting and beautifully shot.  The locations, costumes and acting are all top notch.  I think that all the actors playing playing historical personalities did a marvelous job capturing the essence of their characters.  Here is the Trailer for the film.....

I would recommend it knowing that it may not be for everyone, 

but I thought it was a really terrific film!!

A Santa Ornament

Last night I sat a fussed with my newest sampler stitching and switched out some silks and I think I am getting to where I am happier with it, but not all the way there.  So there is more switcheroos tonight and maybe, just maybe by the end of the week I will show a little snap.

Reality TV?????

Gentle Readers and Dear Friends the outpouring of kind comments was overwhelming!!  I do thank you all so very much.  The continued encouragement fro the Stitching-Blog Community is just the best!!!

I started on a new sampler last night but am less than enthused with my colour conversion.  I think I am going to tweak it a bit before I show it as I am probably going to frog most of the stitching I have already done....  I guess thems the breaks when you do a switch up from DMC to Belle Soie and go from some very bright choices to a more subtle palette.

One of my guilty little pleasures I get from the TeeVee happens on Monday Nights at about 9 pm...  its RuPaul's Drag Race.  Last night was the "Reunited" wrap up show and Crowning of the "next Drag Super Star."  Now, I realize that Drag is not for everyone - I have enjoyed Drag shows for years and totally enjoy all the bitchiness that the "Drag Race" brings.  Well, last night they were down to the three last standing Drag Queens...  and Miss Sharon needles came out on the winner.....

I also really enjoy and never miss this show on Sunday evenings....  The Amazing Race.  

I was really sad to see the Kentucky team of Mark and Bopper go home this week, but they were so beat down and so far behind I just new they wouldn't be able to catch up.  The gave 110% every episode and I was routing for them every week!!  With the teams that are left I am not sure who I would like to win...  I do know who I don't want to win, but I won't put that out here.....

So you see, I do watch some very mindless TeeVee between my marathon movie watching.  ;)
