Remembering My Dad

GR&DF thanks for stopping by yesterday - and for the kind comments about the post. There was a question from dear Nicola about the Barbecue sandwich yesterday that I wanted to answer. She asked "What was pulled pork?" It is basically just long roasted shoulder/ham meat that literally falls apart and is easy to just pull and serve - In eastern North Carolina we have chopped BBQ and the sauce is a vinegar based sauce, in Tennessee the sauce is mustard based and the meat is sliced, in the deep south, Texas/Louisiana and along the Gulf coast it is is also sliced but the sauce is a tomato based sauce - and you get different variations all over the place. I really love good BBQ and have had lots in my life - from some that was so smoky that the meat would belch forth great swirls of smoke to some BBQ that was so lightly smoked you wondered if it had even been in a smoker. I think some of the best comes from small family places or roadside stands - and even some great stuff is cooked at Gas stations - so never pass on a bite of the stuff and try it all!!

I was going back through my picture albums and thought I would share a few more - and since this is Fathers Day weekend they should be with my Dad -

This picture is actually from an album of old snaps that belonged to my Grandmother - it is a favorite of mine of my Dad in about 1935/36 and would have been taken in Atlanta, Georgia.

This was taken on Christmas Day in 1967 in Oxford, Mississippi. There are lots of pictures of my brother and myself dress alike - and here we are again in matching cowboy outfits. The striped nightshirt my Dad is wearing would have been made by my Grandmother as she made many of these over the years.

and here we are at Easter c.1973 in Upper Marlboro Maryland. We are once again dressed alike - I am not too sure why my Mom dressed us alike, but there we are again all matchy matchy!! Look in the background at the great Thunderbird!!

There you go sports fans a walk down memory lane - wishing everyone a super Fathers Day and a great weekend!!

Take care,
edgar

  4. Oh, I do love BBQ, as well. :)

There was a BBQ "Festival" in NYC last weekend and we were lucky enough to go. The best thing we had was actually some amazing pickle chips--they were a lurid yellow and went through about 4 flavor "waves" as you ate them. sweet, then tangy, then spicy, and of course vinegar too. Everyone agreed they were the hit of the day. I do like pulled pork, myself (just about the only pork I like) but I even like "pulled beef", too. :D

Love the photos--you guys sure were some cute kids. ;) I don't know why moms dress non-twin brothers alike; maybe it takes less planning if you can just go for 2 of the same thing!

  5. I love your photos and the matchy matchy outfits! Your mom had a flare for dressing you!

Photos are treasures, my mom and I were at an antique market yesterday and we found an album of someone's family from around the 50's. We were so sad that someone had gotten rid of them...

  8. Great pictures - I love looking at old photos. It is amazing the memories they stir. Looking back at these fashions of my youth (lets not dwell on the detail of my exact age - LOL) --I get a kick out of seeing how formal we all were then. Have a happy and productive stitchy weekend --

  10. My sister and I are two and a half years apart and my mother dressed us alike too. So she could find us in a crowd? Who knows.

  11. Just love the Family Snaps. Some things are just so universal. I think I have a photo of my mother in about 1938 on the SAME PONY although many miles from Atlanta!! That horse must be 118 years old by now and in EVERYONE'S photo album. The photo of you, our brother and dad at Christmas in Oxford, Mississippi....my cousin Laura lives in Oxford, Miss. What a small world. Your resemblance to your dad is just striking in this photo. Thanks so much for sharing these.

  12. Such great pictures of your dad and siblings. I love this.
Your food photos are making me hungry, and can't wait to add some new movies to the queue.
BTW, I didn't care for Four Christmases either. Not one I'd watch again.
    Take Care.

  14. What fabulous photos! I adore barbecue and am particularly fond of NC barbecue with its vinegary sauce, although twist my arm and I'll eat Texas barbecue too. Have you ever been to the Outer Banks and eaten at Pigman's Barbecue?

  15. I definitely see a family resemblance between your dad and you. Great pictures. Thank you for sharing.

My mom went one step further and made my sister and I outfits to match her own! Sometimes there would even be a little something in the same (girly) fabric for my brother, too. Poor kid.

  16. Thank you for sharing those photos. I love going through the old albums. It always makes me smile seeing those outfits and hair-dos from days gone by. :)

Have a wonderful weekend with lots of fabulous finds and wonderful stitching.

  17. What sweet photos. I have to admit I made matching outfits for my sons and dressed my daughter in same fabric as my outfits. Back in the 70's that was the fashion for those that sewed.

  18. I love the pictures! They are wonderful! My mom did the same thing -- my sister and I were always dressed alike. Eventually we rebelled and she stopped. lol! Maybe it was a 60's thing? Dunno!

  19. Your family photos are wonderful. I don't know where you had sliced pork BBQ in Tennessee, but it wasn't Memphis. You ask for BBQ here and you will get pulled pork every time! We are more than a little proud of our BBQ heritage and tend to be a bit on the snobby side about it.

  21. They have great BBQ in Texas! :)
Enjoyed the pictures of your Dad/family...old photos are so much fun.
I wanted to let you know that I will be sending you a little surprise when I get back to TX from NYC...little hint: PS chart :)

  22. Being a southern girl myself, you described pulled pork perfectly and you are exactly right - usually the best BBQ comes from the worst looking places. A BBQ shack that looks like it would fall over if a fly landed on it is the place to try! LOL!
