Some Weather and Some Flicks

GR&DF I do thank you for your kind comments and for your interest in my opinion about the Oscars... but you know me - I would rather walk on my tongue than speak ill of the ignorant or foolish.... I guess I can worry about that tomorrow - today lets dish about the very expensive gowns that made us either cringe or say how lovely!!

Best Dressed - Hands down it had to be Cameron Diaz in an Oscar de la Renta Golden beauty with a close second held by Mo'Nique in a gorgeous blue gown by Tadashi - worst dressed - there are so many where to begin and how to narrow the field!!!

I think the worst dress of the evening was the Givenchy gown worn by Zoe Saldana - too purple, too ruffled, too much - and the pink Galliano gown worn by Charlize Theron was quite odd - what were those bosom fabric petals or swirly bunches on her chest??? I will leave the evening at that -

Yesterday afternoon the weather was so odd - bright and sunny but cold, then dark and rainy that instantly turned to hail - this happened on two occasions in less than an hour - here are some snaps...

looking west towards Twin Peaks and Sutro tower - these clouds built up and up and turned very ominously dark and black...

looking east towards the Bay Bridge and downtown SF - this was during the hail when we were getting rainbowed....

and the the sun broke through and the storm pushed out as quickly as it had come - moving east over Oakland and the central Valley - but we kept the rainbow for a long time with all the residual water in the air.

Last night the stitching was sort of not good - I decided I didn't like the Easter piece I had started last week and had worked on so I tossed it and started something I think will be much better. Sometimes you just gotta throw in the towel and make a new start. I have about 6 days to get it together so I will have to concentrate on this piece this week.

There have been quite a few flickers over the past few days - lest start off with a great Depression era film - "Prosperity" - 1932 - starring Marie Dressler and Polly Moran. A feel good film about the integrity of the banking system in a small town. A short film that showcases Marie Dressler at her best and quirkiest. This is shown on TCM often, if you get the chance you should try and catch it. Next up is "What Price Glory" - 1952 - starring James Cagney an Dan Dailey. A WWI film about two Marines in love with the same vivacious French coquette. Another war flick - you know me and my war films - was "The Hunters" - 1958 - starring Robert Mitchum, Robert Wagner and Richard Egan. A really good film about the "forgotten war" - the Korean War. - Robert Mitchum plays a WWII air ace who is now in charge of some rather cocky new airmen flying fighter jets. The films high points are the air battles -with some really great aerial photography. The last film is "Love me or Leave me" - 1955 - starring Doris Day and James Cagney. The film is the fictionalized version of the rise of Ruth Etting and the stormy relationship she had with her small time gangster "manager" then husband Martin Snyder. I have seen this film many times and always enjoy it. Doris sings some great numbers and James is great as the gangster!!

There you go sports fans. Thank you so much for stopping by and for your comments!!!

Take care,
edgar

  1. Remember when Cameron Diaz used to get wear odd pieces or her hair was just not 'done'? This year, she looks perfectly glam, you're right! You know a big part of the Oscars is just looking at all the lovely (and sometimes odd) outfits!

  2. I don't know if it's me or what...but did you notice that Monique and Gabourey Sidibe were both wearing sapphire-colored dresses? Maybe as an homage to the author of "Push," the book from which their movie was based?

  3. Absolutely agree on the "Best Dressed" selection!

My first thought when I saw Charlize Theron... "Did she look in a mirror??" LOL

  4. Wow! That was quite the storm that blew over!

There are many time when watching the different awards shows when I wonder, "WHY?"

    Thanks for the reviews!

  5. Beautiful weather pics! Love the rainbow! Cameron looked so great- most times she looks like she just rolled out of bed, but it looks like she finally took her looks seriously. She looked wonderful!

  6. Well, the dresses, they were something to behold and not in a good way. Several ladies looked like they had been in the same wedding party as the dresses appeared alike in style - bad! My daughter is a hair stylist and I agree there is some really bad hair out there - especially on TV news people and show hosts that you see everyday - what are they thinking!

Glad you got rainbowed! We haven't had a decent rainbow in north SC in quite a while.

Happy Stitching! and did you actually throw away the piece you were working on for Easter?

  8. It seems like this year the dresses were either really good or really bad! I do wonder who is telling these ladies that they look great in these nasty dresses and do they look in the mirror!

  9. There were definitely some weird dresses this year -- that Zoe dress being one of them! I like classic, like Cameron Diaz's dress. :D Nice pics of the weather! We hardly ever get rainbows -- or maybe we just have too many trees so we don't see them. lol!

  10. I prefer the "Old Hollywood" Oscar days when the women were glamorously dressed and their hair was perfectly groomed and shiny. Now, it seems that the weirder you look the more attention you get. I didn't comment yesterday but I agree with you Edgar...don't these women know what a comb is??? Don't they know how awful they look in the get-ups they wear?? Sheesh...get a clue, please!!!

  11. I must disagree on Zoe Saldana's dress. I liked it but then I also liked Sara Jessica's dress! I know both were said to be bad. I liked the the tied one with the full skirt also. I especially liked Mariska Hargitay, and I could wear Meryl Streep's at my age now. I also liked Sandra Bullock's dress but do not care for her. I will defintely show my age by liking Parker's hairdo also.

I have thrown away pieces before also. Lif is too short and stash too large to do somethin you do not want to.

  13. I think Cameron was channeling her inner Angelique Jolie. Not a bad thing to do. Overall, I thought the dresses this year were much better than last year. I liked Sandra Bullock's dress, but I especially liked all the diamond necklaces. They were really glam!

  14. Cameron did look stunning didn't she? She was my best pick too. I liked Sandra Bullock as well. There are some that were there, like the one in the awful purple dress, who you would think would be embarrassed to go out in public like that. I agree, there were lots of hair-don'ts.I remember growing up and watching the Oscars. It used to be a time when they all looked so sophisicated and respectable. What on Earth has happened?!

  15. The pink Galliano gown worn by Charlize Theron.....runway yes, regular human being...NO. It was called the "Cinnabon Boob" dress on E!
I did like Sandra Bullock and JLo. Sarah Jessica Parker got some bad press over her outfit, but only she could pull-off something like that.
