A Little Stitchin'

Gentle Friends, over my loooong weekend I did get some stitching done .... here's a snaperoo...

... as you can see I am working my way down the left side to the urn and then will turn my attention to the right side.....

... aside from stitching I did practically nothing... I did some laundry, I vacuumed a couple of times, went to breakfast and out to coffee a couple of times... and watched quite a few movies... two things I didn't do...  I did not shave (and I am still pretty scruffy as I type this!!) and I did not wash the car....  overall it was a fun few days off...  and I am planning another loooong weekend soon!!

A Little Bakin'

Gentle Friends, last Friday I stumbled on a recipe for Date and Nut Bars... and had to make some...

.... the recipe comes from October Farm Blog and they turned out perfectly!!!  You can click HERE for the recipe.  They made a big 9 x 13 pan so I sent most of them to work with Rico where they were a hit and gobbled up!!  They are really delicious warmed up a bit in the microwave.

Gentle Friends,  I've been stitching away on "Sojourner" and here's a snap as it stands

That's about it for today.  It will be a short 3 day week for me as I've taken off Thursday and Friday to run around town or I might just sleep late then go and hang out in North beach.... whatever....

61 Years Ago...

Gentle Friends, today would have been my parents 61st Anniversary... 

... and what would a wedding be without a big satin dress, a huge train and your great-grandmother's lace veil to wear... after the ceremony they left for a wedding trip to New York City...

Thrifty Thursday

Gentle Friends, over the weekend I found a few things...

...  from l to r ...  a great older cordial/sherry glass (one of my weaknesses is a nice glass of Drambuie every now and then and I had broken my other glass so I replaced it with this little beauty), a super cut glass - sterling lid/foot jam/jelly jar and a really wonderful art nouveau sterling hand mirror in the "Cupid" pattern - the silver pieces were terribly tarnished when I bought them but they both polished up nicely!!

A Little Stitchin'

Gentle friends,  I finished up the final band int he center...  here's a snap...

...  I used two strands of silk for the Satin Stitches, and only a single strand for the Rhodes Stitches.  I tried using two for the Rhodes stitches, but they got clumpy and just didn't look right....  I really enjoyed this band and think it turned out nicely.  Now on to the over one stitching and the rest of the flowers..

Thrifty Thursday...

Gentle Friends, I picked up some fun stuff over the weekend.... here's a snap....

... from l to r... I found this large porcelain vanity tray made by Royal Worcester dated 1891, a great vintage set of Yosemite Bookends, a DVD, a Springerle Cookie mold from "Springerle Joy", and a really lovely transferware plate with birds....  not a bad haul.

A Little Bakin'

Gentle friends, I found some coconut in the freezer and then got a wild hair about making some cookies... et voila... Hawaiian Christmas Cookies......

...  this is a cookie from my childhood and very much like a Mexican Wedding cooking,  really crunchy, not too sweet and great with a cup of coffee or tea.  I found dozens of recipes on line and the main difference between the recipes on line and my hand written card from many years ago is the amount of sugar used in the dough.  It can be a little as a 1/4 cup and as much as a 3/4 cup , I find that 1/4 cup of sugar the perfect amount, for my taste.  So, here's a pretty typical recipe....click HERE.

Over the weekend I finished up the cross stitching on the Mexican Band and only have the Satin stitching left.....  here's a snap..

... as I said before I replaced the called for "Fern Frond" (my skein of silk was far too light a colour) for "Herb Garden " and couldn't be happier with the results.

A Little Bakin'

Gentle Friends... I decided to make a cake, and already had a recipe picked out... from Sally's Baking Addiction, a super Blog - the cake I wanted to make was a "Cheesecake Swirl Carrot Cake"...  after cooling and a quick glaze..... 

...   I think what attracted me to the cake was the tunnel of "cheesecake" it was a great addition!!

...  I substituted crushed pineapple for apple sauce because that's what I had in the cupboard.  I also used a mixture of currants and raisins - this was such a great Fall tasting cake that I am sure I'll make it again!!  I didn't use a Bundt pan, but my stand by tube pan which I like it better.  The cake was super moist and had a great flavour!

A Little Stichin'

Gentle Friends, over the weekend I finished up the "Russian Bird" Band on Sojourner... 

 here's a snap...

... now on to the "Mexican" band....  I've had to change the colour for this band from "Fern Fond"  to "Herb Garden" - the skein of silk I have in FF is way too light I think, so I tried HG.  I've already done the Montenegrin stitched bar ( loved this stitch BTW) below the Birds in HG after frogging out about 3 inches of FF....  HG is a colour I really like anyway!!

... we ordered pizza for dinner.... gotta love a dinner you don't cook!!!
