Thrifty Thursday

Gentle Friends, we were out and about Saturday Thrifting, and overall it was a bust, but even with not quite the selection we're used to I did find a few treasures....

... from l to r - a box of sweet little handpainted glass ornaments and when I saw the Rosary box I thought that was all there was, then I popped it open and out fell a sterling Rosary, I bought this for Rico, then I found the Brown Bag shortbread pan, called "Norwegian Trees" for $4 - what a deal!!!

One of my all time, and I mean all time favorite cookies is shortbread. I have loved Walkers for decades, but I've never tried to make shortbread.  On Sunday afternoon after Mass, I thought, "I'm sure I can do this" and sure enough using the recipe on the web site.................. slam bam - in a pan - from start to finish - about 45 minutes later out of the oven popped.......
..... this delectable piece of pastry - I'll never buy shortbread again.  I think I got scared and left it in a few minutes too long as it did brown a bit more than it should, but it is (was) oh so good!!!  That large crack on the right is were I caught it on the pan when I turned it upside down....

...... while still warm I cut it into pieces and sprinkled a little sugar on top for sparkle.

  10. It doesn't look like a bust. How well do you think the shortbread will ship? I can give you my mailing address. LOL! I love that you always include the link to the recipes that you use. I've bookmarked the Brown Bag site.....loved it. Too bad they don't sell retail, now to find a store that sells them. Thanks for sharing a little part of your life with us.

  11. Oh, Edgar—this post is divine! I love all your finds, and what gorgeous shortbread!!! I love it all ways—direct from the mold and served with style on beautiful silver. :D I bought a child's plate and bowl set in silver a few months ago and could really use your polishing tips. I don't want to over-do and obliterate the definition of the figures. (It is "Old Mother Hubbard"and alphabet with lots of dogs and animals. I've been meaning to send you a pic with the question.

P.S. The ornaments and rosary are also just tops!!! Super!

  22. I have trouble getting mine out of the pan, so I usually use the cookie press. Any secrets to share? That WAS a great deal on the BB!

  23. I love those puffy little ornaments! My grandma used to have those on her tree!

I like using the Trisha Yearwood shortbread recipe. Sometimes I add cinnamon to it! Here is the recipe:

    1 cup self rising flour
    1 stick softened butter
    1/4 cup sugar
    1/4 cup brown sugar
Mix all in the mixer until combined then press into pan. Bake at 350 for about 20-25 minutes.
