NC Adventures... Part I - Train Ride and some Super Meals!!!

Gentle Friends, the second half of my trip I headed to Eastern North Carolina...

... after saying goodbye to my hostess I walked the few blocks from her house to Union Train Station.  I really was very excited about taking the train to NC.

... Inside the main terminal...

... the route I took from Washington... I got off at Wilson and Dale picked me up there - it's the closest stop to Ayden my final destination...

For my first dinner back in NC we decided  to stop off in Greenville at Parker's for some really terrific pork Barbecue...
... it's a real down home place, not fancy - just plain and simple with delicious food!!

...  they use a gas fired pit to cook/roast the pork over - it gives the meat a cleaner less greasy taste, along with barbecue comes a piece of fried chicken, Brunswick stew, fried okra, cole slaw and some corn sticks.....  a really perfect meal!!!!

... the next day we hit a Waffle House, you know how I do love the WH - the pecan waffle, grits and sausage - a really super breakfast!!!

...another place I wanted to get to for dinner was The Dixie Queen, in Winterville - an Eastern NC staple having been in the same location for about 40 years.

...  the seafood is really fresh, and I had the fried shrimp/oyster combination.  This is far from fine dining - it's served on styrofoam plates with plastic utensils - but if you get past that and just enjoy your dinner, you'll be hard pressed to find better!!

... on my last night, we headed to another really great barbecue place that's been around since 1966, this one in Ayden, called Bum's.  They cook over a wood-fueled pit and so the pork has a very different old fashioned flavor...

.... at Bum's instead of having a menu to choose from you choose what you want from a cafeteria style food line, since the sides change all the time...  I had some terrific barbecue, collard greens and black-eyed peas, again the dinner comes with corn sticks.
