Planning a Little Trip

Gentle Friends, I thought this year instead of going to Europe for a little vacation I would do some domestic travelling....  you may remember that I grew up in Maryland and my Dad worked in Washington so I have fairly fond memories of DC and all the attractions, but those are memories of 30 +years ago - and I am sure that things have changed!!

My plans are coming together to travel this Fall -  first to DC to tour around on my own and then on to Eastern North Carolina, where I have friends and family, some of them I've not seen since I went to ECU - GO PIRATES!!!

I have a short list of things to do or I should say "would like to do," but was wondering what else any of you would suggest.  Preferably out of the way and off the main "tourist radar" - a few more things I like.... History stuff, first and foremost... art, churches.... historic sights etc...  so, any suggestions you may want to import I'm all ears!!

  1. Check out the Congressional Cemetery. It's very historic. They even have a totem pole there. My husband has been there several times and has taken some great photos there.

  2. On the outskirts of DC is Mt. Vernon and just a short drive from there is the shop, In Stitches. Depending on your route to NC, there is Montpelier in Orange, Monticello in Charlottesville, Ashlawn-Highland in Charlottesville, and Williamsburg/Jametown/Yorktown. Hope you have a fabulous trip!

  3. Sounds like a terrific trip with lots less time riding on the airplane!

  4. I would really suggest the Emily Post Mansion she has a collection of Russian China and jewels that she brought back when from Russia as an ambassadors wife. It is a great tour. I did get in trouble though because I asked if we would return any or their treasures now. Tour guide was not happy with me!

  8. Oh enjoy your trip! Love touring the DC area. Our middle son lived in Warrenton, VA for several years so we got lots of sight seeing done--even during the height of the cherry blossom bloom. I second touring Mt. Vernon, etc. There shouldn't be large crowds since school will be in session.

  9. What about Asheville in NC. I know that it is touristy but still quite beautiful.

  10. Hi Edgar. I live in Arlington, VA and work in DC. I second the vote for a trip to In Stitches. The Textile Museum is also worth a trip, but know it is mostly Asian textiles. Also I recommend that you reach out to the American History Musuem textile curator to see if you can have a behind the scenes tour where they pull out the drawers and let you see all the great samplers in their collection. The Bureau of Engraving and Printing is fun too if you like money. Also feel free to email me with any questions. Stevemarty@msn.com.

  11. Edgar - I live in Winchester, VA. I want to give you another vote for In Stitches. Honestly, even though I live here, I always love going to the art galleries in the area, especially at the Smithsonian.

If you ever dreamed of being a pilot, or just like planes, the Udvar-Hazy Aerospace Museum out by Dulles Airport is a must.

    Safe travels!

  12. make the holocaust museum a must. Also walk from Washington monument to Lincoln monument on the right side and say hello to Einstein for me, A large Sculpture of Uncle Al sitting down.

  13. Went last Sept. -- the Holocaust Museum was the best, most impressive, etc.
For some fabulous architecture - the Library of Congress (google)....
The WWII Memorial is also amazing.
Many people seem to overlook the Washington Cathedral. They give a wonderful
    tour there.
    So much to see...

  14. A history buff shouldn't visit this area without a trip to Williamsburg in my opinion. We lived in the area for 30 years and always found interesting places to see. The plantations on route 5 are great as well. The church where Martha and George Washington were married is still there and has services every Sunday in New Kent County,VA. Enjoy.

  15. I live near Falls Church... in the metro area most of my life. In Stitches is a great shop. The Newseum is worth a visit. Hillwood is lovely and like a little escape though it's in the city. My favorite of the Smithsonian museums on the mall is U.S. History.

  16. Edgar, I live in Richmond. If you can attend the re-enactment of Patrick Henry's "Give Me Liberty or Give Me Death" speech and St. John's church I highly recommend it.

Also, the White House of the Confederacy.

Hope we have nice weather for you when you are here.
