Weekend Thrifting

Gentle Friends thanks so much for stopping by, I wanted to mention a few tings I picked up last weekend while out and about doing my usual thrifting and estate sale shopping.  Here's a couple of pieces I especially liked....

....  the silver piece turned out really nice, it started off really black with years of tarnish, and polished up beautifully, the pattern is "Navarre," the "deep Cut" plate is a piece from the Westmorelnad Company and was cheap to begin with, then when I got it to the counter it turned out to be on sale and was half price - now you can't beat that!!

This next piece I picked up at a thrift store and wanted to show some snaps to get other opinions....

Now I would call this a table top "cellarette,"  It looks kind of like a desk, made of mahogany with it's original or very old brasses, and the brass ball feet are either really old or original..  The finish is faded from sunlight on three sides, there is a chip from the mahogany veneer on the back left side, but overall still in pretty good condition on the front and top.  It has two of it's original decanters (or very old hand blown, gilt decorated ones)  The lining is in good condition on the interior and the removable dividers.  It stands about 9 1/2" tall and is about 7" square.......  what do you think?????  I can't find out anything on the Internet nor do I know where to start looking.

That's about it for today sports fans - do stop again!!

Take care,
edgar

  1. Great thrifting! Your box could be a tantalus decanter box. Could there have been a space for glasses in the lid?

The cabinet ...hmmm....well this is all I could find:

ITEM #28 looks very similar to your new treasure.

I will continue looking tonight as I love a good mystery.

  4. Good thrifting! Love the bottle case--at least that's what I would call it. Usually a cellaret is a larger piece, a free-standing piece of furniture sometimes lined with tin or even copper, A bottle case, obviously, was much smaller and designed to be portable, also sometimes lined, but always divided as is yours, to hold bottles manufactured for it. (Think of it as an early cooler for people who knew how to "tail-gate" in high style ;)

Wish I lived nearer--we could thrift together. We have some wonderful places in my neck of the woods...if you're ever out this way...

  5. Hi Edgar

Here in the UK your box with decanters would be known as a Tantalus (presumably after the myth). They come up for auction quite regularly - so worth a look around to see what it might be worth - depends on age and condition obviously.

  7. Wonderful!! All three are So Beautiful!!

I've no help on the Mysterious Box, but am really curious to see what turns up in the comments.

Did not have a chance to comment on your Friday Drama but--Ho, Boy! It sounds like you've really had to rub along with the seamy and startling sides of humanity recently. I hope you'll have a relaxing summer of swimming, grilling, happy hounds and great thrift finds to wind down.

  8. Those are wonderful finds. I love silver pieces and have collected a few of them, although I don't know what I'm going to do with them. I'm wondering if your box was used to store different alcohols in. I've never seen one like that before, but it's really nice.

  11. Great finds. Your little box reminds me of a liquor cabinet type thing that my sister has. That is quite a find I would think , worth quite a bit.

  14. Hi Edgar,
I love seeing your thrifting finds. You've mentioned several times about how tarnished things are & you really get them to sparkle. What do you use?
