The Misión San Francisco de Asís

Gentle Readers and Dear Friends it is Monday again after an all too short weekend!!

Yesterday morning we decided to start our search for new place to attend Mass  We have been going to Most Holy Redeemer for the longest time, but with Fr. Steve Leaving after such a long time -  and now with all the changes some good, most bad, awe gave it a few months try - to no avail.  We started yesterday on our search, and decided to try The Mission Dolores Basilica - named for a nearby creek - Arroyo de Nuestra Señora de los Dolores - Our Lady of Sorrows Creek.

The services were held in the "new" Basilica built in 1913-17 - the earlier brick church was destroyed in the 1906 earthquake.....  but the original 18th century smaller adobe church - The Mission San Francis de Asis came through the earthquake with little damage......

It was a very old fashioned service and we really enjoyed it.... I took some snaps after Mass....

The old adobe church and the "new" basilica....

These are the front doors that open onto Church Street

This is a side view of north door...

The Historical Landmark Plaque.

There are a few other churches we might try out in the future... and I'll have my camera ready!!

Thanks for stopping by, do stop again.

Take care,
edgar

  1. Lovely church. I really miss the Mass being said in Latin. I grew up with that. I also miss the church I grew up going to. After the Mass changed to English, they still said Midnight Mass (Christmas Eve) in Latin and the entire church was lit with nothing by candles. What a beautiful site. My parents always let me stay up late and go to Midnight Mass.

  2. What a beautiful "new" building. And the old church is lovely too. Good luck in your church hunt, it's always hard to leave one church family in search of another, even when you know it's for the best.

  5. Edgar: What a beautiful site to see, I love the look of the older Catholic Churches, we go to St. Ignatius catholic Church here in AnnandaleMn. it is a very modern looking Church, we still have the Stations Of The Cross on the wall and have stained glass on the windows but the rest looks very modern built I think in the 60s.
The lamps hanging from the ceiling look like flying saucers oh my.
I love the Mass in Latin here in Minnesota there are only two Churches that I know of that have the Mass in Latin everyweek.
I do miss the (asmy great nephew calls it) the olden days what a giggle. I once read that the first Basilica was built here in Minneapolis.
    I should look this up.

    Hugs

  6. What a beautiful church! It's too bad that your old place has fallen into unacceptable-ness. I hope your search leads you to the right place and that you're happy with your new church once found.

  8. Mission Dolores is a wonderful church! My brother and sister both attended the school and my sister got married there. I like to visit the mission and visit the old cemetary. I think you'll enjoy it! :)

  13. What a beautiful Church and Basilica, It is very difficult when priests swap and change, we are now very lucky at our church that Fr Bill is a young priest(early 40's), is very modern thinking and has been a priest for 12 years in his own words he says 'he had a normal life before entering the church' lol, he accepts everyone and judges no-one with is wonderful. So much so I want to involved very much in the parish, I have become on the Sacramental Catechists which I am enjoying so very much. Praying that you both find spiritual happiness there.xx

  14. What a beautiful place of worship! I grew up as a Catholic & went to Catholic school for 8 years. The mass was always said in Latin. I really miss the various traditions, especially during Lent & Christmas. Thank you for bringing back lovely memories : )
