A Little Mayflower Stitchin'

Gentle Friends, stitching away on CTA... here's a snaperoo..

.. I had an email this week about this piece and if I had any connection to the Mayflower.... actually I do... through my mother's family we can trace back to Fear Brewster Allerton and her Mother Mary (Wentworth?) Brewster 1569? - 1627 who did sail on the Mayflower with her two youngest children, Love and Wrestling (both sons).  Fear and Patience were left behind in the Netherlands and followed in 1623 on the "Anne."
That first winter all but 4 of the women that arrived at Plimouth Colony died.  Mary, one of the survivors was present at the 1st Thanksgiving.  When Fear arrived she married the widowed Isaac Allerton 20 years her senior.  They had two children, Sarah (who died young) and Isaac Jr who became a Colonel, planter, merchant, and trader in colonial America.  So, Mary would be my 12th great grandmother...  I was thinking of stitching her name a different color than the rest...any thoughts??

  1. There is a facebook page for stitching the SAL. Quite a few people have mentioned stitching their ancestor in another color or just a darker version in order to be noticed/recognized. Both of my ancestors were the men, coming down thru sons, both widowers when they arrived. I may do just the last name. Your piece is looking good.

  3. I can't believe how far along you are already! Most definitely I would stitch her name in a different color. If there's room, I would stitch her birth year & death year over 1 thread so it would be small. This will be a special family piece. I hope you have already chosen a special spot in your home to hang it! I am sure you guys are still doing well and I hope the smoke
is going away. The west has certainly had it's share of wild fires this
    summer. Many blessigs to you...

  4. Edgar I would stitch ancestor in a different color. I would also add a little story to back of framed sampler. I have no female relatives who were on the mayflower. You have stitched a lot. I was wanting to do ship and names first but have not gotten WDW Oscar thread yet. I had some to begin border but stoped incase dye lot is way off.

  5. What wonderful information Edgar. By all means , I would stitch her name in a very special color. Not many people can trace their family back that far. I am a member of the DAR but his parents were from England so that is as far back as I go. When I stitched LHN's patriots, I did a special center block for my two Revolutionary patriots. I am a great lover of history . I like Mary's suggestion of adding that info to the back of the design.

  7. You should definitely stitch Mary's name in a different colour, so that it stands out and maybe write something for the back of the framed piece to show your connection.

  11. You are way ahead of me. I finally got my fabric. I went through my stash of fabric but didn't have a piece anywhere near the DMC colors you sent me. Thanks. I was able to get some of the 40ct vintage mocha from Country Sampler. It was my last phone call. I love the idea of stitching the ancestor a different color.

    Stay safe out there!
