A Little Stitchin'

Gentle friends, I've been working on "Sojourner" a bit..... and as on last night she looks like this........

.... I finished up the alphabet bands and have started on the band of Queen's Stitched "Strawberries."  One of the reasons I wanted to stitch this sampler was to get some "specialty" stitching experience.  Usually I avoid specialty stitches like the plague, but I've have now come to the conclusion I really should know something else except X X X X X.........  as you can see I've gotten the first half one done and am now on to the first full berry, and find the Queen Stitch quite fiddly, great looking and lovely coverage, but fiddly.

  1. Sampler is beautiful and you are making great progress. Queen stitch is not one of my favorite stitches--its beautiful when done correctly

  2. Very Pretty! I also tend to stay away from specialty stitches. If I do stitch them, it is usually on a Blackbird Designs chart. I'm very rarely satisfied though with the way my stitches look.

  3. Wow! That's a real beauty, and you're a brave soul. I have practiced and practiced on that blasted queen stitch. Just when I think I've gotten the hang of it, the next one looks like poo!! Yours look nice. Enjoy the rest of the journey.

  5. Ok, you don't just know X X X. You can also include / / / and --------.

Specialty stitches aren't that bad. I keep wanting to try Hardanger but the whole cutting thing... Yeah, no.

  6. You're making great progress.
I'm working on Sojourner too. I made a mistake on the first strawberry and now I can't get rid of the red spot on the fabric where I frogged. to keep from being disappointed, I moved on to more of the flowers and the bottom.

  7. The sampler is coming along so beautifully. I do try to use other stitches when called for but I just can't seem to get that queen stitch at all. Any suggestions?

  11. Everyone approaches the Queen stitch somewhat differently. The parts of the stitch we all seem to agree on but the order in which we stitch them is what throws some for a loop.
Personally I start on the far outside portion on either the left or right, just pick one, then the inside of that side then the inside on the other side and lastly the outside. i.e. work everything from right to left or left to right.
I also use one thread/strand less than the instructions call for (unless they say to 1 strand/thread). Two much bulk leaves the stitch lumpy looking.
Not my favorite but not my most detested either.
Your piece is coming along quite nicely.

  12. Beautiful work! Yes, the queen stitch is fiddly. lol! I'm like you -- I tend to stick to plain cross stitch when I can. I know various stitches and can do them, but plain old crosses are the most fun for me.
