A Little Nutty

Gentle Friends, we headed out into the cold last night for a little culture... the ballet to be precise.  I missed it last as I was in ICU recovering from surgery and we gave away our tickets... but a year has passed, I'm quite a bit better and so off we went... to see the Nutcracker...here's a little taste of what we saw.  This is from the ad that the Ballet runs on our local stations...

... they do a really spectacular job... and we thoroughly enjoyed the whole experience!

A Few Little Changes....

Gentle Friends, this mid-week post is all about changing up charts and making them your own.  I more often than not change floss and usually always change out the linen... I have also changed up whole charts or large sections to suit me and my stitching.

A while back... like a few years... I stitched up a lovely sampler that had been commissioned by the Knoxville, Tennessee Chapter of the EGA. It was in honor of the "Ramsey House" or as the property has been called for a couple of hundred years "Swan Pond."  I saw the chart on another Blog and fell in love with the border, house, and very sentimental verse.

Swan Pond Sampler 1797
Designed for the Knoxville TN EGA
40ct Ale from PTP - My Conversion to overdyed Floss from the charted DMC

I changed quite a bit about this chart.  I expanded the alphabet to complete all the letters.  I also did away with the central medallion that had far more info about its original owner.  Now, what prompted this post in the first place and my digging around in my completed pile of stitching to look at the sampler once again was a lovely email from another stitcher.  She lives in Tennessee and had seen my version of the sampler and ran with it making it her own... here's a snap...

...  a super job and totally changed up to reflect her family.  So, the gist of this post is to never be afraid of changing a chart or the recommended floss or linen... make that sucker your own!!

A Little Stitchin'

Gentle Friends, well, I got antsy about the border meeting up and so I went ahead and got the "vine" connected...here's a snaparoo...

... what a relief when the two points met... exactly... for some reason as I stitched along I felt I was off a thread, and I would go back over the stitching and re-count, and re-count, but never found a mistake..... but I knew there was one there... and now I'm proved wrong.  A good thing as fudging the border would have been a real pain.

A Little Stitchin' and a Thanksgiving Snap

Gentle Friends, I had some extra time over the weekend for stitchin', here's where I am at the moment...

.. I went back and frogged the "C"... then replaced the called for WDW "Parchment" with WDW "Pebble."  I like the "Pebble" as it is still light but it shows up against the linen.  This is turning out to be a really fun stitch with all the colors.  It's not a very traditional Christmas piece.

A Little Stitchin'

Gentle friends, here's a snap of the start of the Christmas stitch...

"Feliz Navidad' - by Blackbird Designs
Number 2 in the Christmas Sampler Series
40ct "Barn Owl" from Birds of a Feather
Called for WDW Floss

The picture makes the linen look more yellow than it actually is, and the Q-snap makes the stitching look wonky but you get the idea.  I am thinking I'll need to switch out the "Parchment" floss for something else as it totally disappears against the fabric... the letter "C" is what's pushing me towards that decision.  Other than that I'm pretty happy with the rest of the colors so far.

A Little Hallowe'en Finish

Gentle Friends, I finished up Halloween Rules, and here's a snaperoo...

"Halloween Rules" - by Lizzie Kate
40ct "Chocolate Milk" from Fabrics by Stephanie
Using the recommended floss

... it ended up being a fun stitch in the end and I'm glad I stitched it ...now to get it framed.  Although I did use the recommended floss I stitched it on higher-count linen than the 32ct called-for linen.  The only difference this made with the end result is that each section has accompanying little buttons that I did not use.  Where appropriate I stitched a black "X" for the black buttons or an orange "X" for the orange buttons or just nothing where the button was charted.  I really don't miss the little additions and more times than not on past stitches I've left off the doo-dads and not really missed them.  This is because I like to stitch on 40ct linen and many times when there are doo-dads or adornments charted the called-for linen is 30ct or 32ct which I really do not enjoy stitching on... I stitch because it's relaxing and if it isn't then what's the point???  I started up my Christmas piece but it's sad looking at the moment so I'll wait until Monday to post that snap.

A Little Stitchin'

Gentle Friends, not much to show this week...here's a snap of the first two blocks...

... as I have been stitching along on HR I think in my head just how much "what" I stitch has changed from a decade ago and when I completed "Christmas Rules."  I doubt today if I would bother with either of these pieces... oh, well... HR is still cute and I already had it in my mind I would do this companion piece... and once something gets stuck in that steel trap (Ha Ha) there is no prying it loose!  I guess everyone's taste as to what they stitch changes over time... do you find that to be true???

A Little Stitchin'

Gentle Friends, I've finished up the header for Halloween Rules, and here's a snaperoo...

... I fixed the camera settings so you can see the linen color quite a bit better...however, you might also notice a change.  When I started stitching the first grave marker "R" I kept thinking about why or what is the jagged black line of stitching.  I took a good look at the chart, which is free from the Lizzie Kate site so the copy I had printed is not as clear as the card charts - so I read it wrong and had to go back and rip out the "Blackbird" and re-stitch the correct "Moss" - which makes sense and looks far better... oh well,  onward!

A Little Start, an Old Finish some Shots and Dinner

Gentle Friends, here's a snap of my start on the second Hallowe'en piece ...

"Halloween Rules": - by Lizzie Kate
40ct "Chocolate Milk" from Fabrics by Stephanie
Using the Recommended Floss

The snap is quite washed out due to the sorry lighting... as you can see it's a very small start and kind of dull...  I stitched up the companion piece back in 2010... here's a snap...

"Christmas Rules"
36ct LL Lite Exemplar
Recommended Floss

This piece is framed up but also packed up so this old snap will have to do.

A Little Hallowe'en Finish

Gentle Friends, I put the last stitches in Jenny Bean last night and have a snap to show today...

"Jenny Bean's Halloween Sampler" - Shakespeare's Peddler, 2009 - 9/10 - 10/5/23
40ct "Eastwick" from Needle & Flax
I used the called for GAST Floss - except I exchanged...
Pecan Pie for Woodpile & Baked Clay for Fudge Ripple

This was a fun little piece to work on and since there is still plenty of October left I pulled another Hallowe'en piece from the stash heap.  It's a companion to another piece I stitched over a decade ago, but has been lingering about waiting for me to get a move on and stitch!  I'll post a snaperoo of that on Monday of whatever little bits of stitching I get done over the weekend.

A Little Hallowe'en Start

Gentle Friends, I got the old needle going on my Hallowe'en Sampler over the weekend and as usual, began with the border, It's a bit quirky, but here's a snaperooo...

"Jenny Bean's Halloween Sampler" - Shakespeare's Peddler, 2009
40ct "Eastwick" Needle & Flax

I am stitching this using the called for GAST, except I had to switch out  "Woodpile" ( a color even the GAST folks had never heard before, I called there and asked) for "Pecan Pie."  Originally, when this chart was released 14 years ago there was a limited edition bespoke thread pack you could get, I failed to get said pack at the time but I'm good with the regular GAST floss and had them all in my stash, Woo-hoo!  Since the next two stitches are smaller pieces I went ahead and got a jump on the conversion from DMC to overdyed floss for the bigger sampler that lurks after the Hallowe'en and Christmas pieces are finished.

A Little Summer Finish

Gentle Friends, what won't a day off and some late evenings accomplish... I finished up "For the Birds" and here's a snaperoo...

Loose Feathers "For the Birds" - a 9 Part Series by Blackbirds Designs
40ct "Biscuit" from Seraphim Hand Dyed Fabrics by Laurie
Using the Called for WDW Floss
5/25 - 9/7/2023

I really enjoyed this stitch, and will look forward to next Spring and another multi-part BBD stitch... always looking towards the future and the next project!!  I have my Hallowe'en piece all ready to go, then the Christmas Sampler... since both of them are smaller pieces I think they'll stitch up quite quickly so I've even pulled a third stitch, another sampler I've had lurking about for quite a few years...  It's only charted for DMC which I'll switch out for over-dyed floss and then figure out what linen to use.  But all that is in the future...  now it's a fun little Hallowe'en sampler to get a move on.....

Gentle Friends, here is an overall shot with the 8th Part all stitched up... the only change I made to this square was on the front door.  It is charted for an initial, which I didn't like so I put in a little window to match the fenestration of the house...

I took off yesterday for a long weekend and got in some good stitchin' time... now on to the 9th Part "The Last Ripe Berries"... another big bird dominates the square...  looking very much like a pigeon... or as I like to call them our "City Chickens."

Gentle Friends, just stitching away on the 5th section, and here's a snap of the progress...

...  I've still got to add in all the beige flowers... A change I made in this section was to add on the right-hand side of the border those single stitches.  I did this so as to extend the image and leave the single stitch (two threads) break at the vine.  Although the counting was correct I couldn't figure out another way to visually widen the border without the single stitches, without the extension this section looked like a mistake.  Trust me I tried lots of variations with the border before settling in on this "fix."

She sights a Bird—she chuckles—

She flattens—then she crawls—
She runs without the look of feet—
Her eyes increase to Balls—

Her Jaws stir—twitching—hungry—
Her Teeth can hardly stand—
She leaps, but Robin leaped the first—
Ah, Pussy, of the Sand,

The Hopes so juicy ripening—
You almost bathed your Tongue—
When Bliss disclosed a hundred Toes—
And fled with every one—

A Little Stitchin'

Gentle Friends, on the second Loose Feather of FtB... here's a snaperoo...

... when I began stitching on the second part I just left two spaces between the charts and got that bottom section stitched.  Even as I stitched along I really thought about the final image and the 9 parts together - I wasn't as happy as I could have been thinking about the final piece...  I then got on the old computer and started looking for finishes of this as a single piece and how they might look completed.  There are not too many out there but I did find an example where the stitcher had added a vine and flower chain between each of the three rows vertically... me likey!!

I frogged out that urn and flowers and figured out my vine addition.  I dug around in the stash and found a green (WDW Kudzu) and blue (WDW Blue Fescue) that I think works well - both of these floss colors are my addition to the called-for blues and greens.  I like the break between the charts since they really have no other connection other than being a series.  They do look a bit odd bumping up against each other.

I also noticed when I posted this snap that I am off on the right, going back and looking at the actual piece I'm off two threads down, so that means another round of frogging and a re-stitch as that dip to the right is makin' me crazy at the moment!!

Baby Adelaide 1926-2012

This great shot was taken in the sideyard of my grandmother's house in North Carolina, I'm thinking spring or even a birthday shot when she was turning two, that info is lost to time.  I always see this snap and think both my mom and the goat were not too happy about taking this picture!!!

A Birthday

Gentle Friends, today would have been my grandfather's 116th birthday... he is often in my thoughts... here's a favorite picture of him as a baby...

Baby Herbert 1907-1994

... I think this picture would have been taken in the Fall of 1907 on the family farm outside of Atlanta.  You can just see my great-grandmother, Stella,  just behind holding up my Grandfather.  It's a sweet picture and I'm very happy that it has survived all this time.
